Food connects people within and across communities. This is no different at Flinders, where students and staff are finding and creating opportunities to come together through sustainable community gardening.

Flinders is home to the longest-running university community garden in Australia. The Community Permaculture Garden at Sturt fosters student leadership, knowledge and learning around sustainability, environmental awareness and practical organic gardening skills on campus.
Grow, Eat, Learn is an initiative of Flinders University students to design a series of community market gardens inspired by the “food is free” movement. The first market garden is situated alongside McHughs on South Ridge.
As well as providing a culturally significant place for on-campus gathering, the new Yunggorendi Inparrila Meeting Space is also home to a range of bush tucker plants available to the community.
Our retailers are taking on the challenge to operate more sustainably, with many adopting measures like using compostable packaging, eliminating single-use plastics and switching to fair trade products.
There are plenty of opportunities for our Flinders community to be involved in sustainability on campus.
