Your career

To qualify for registration with the Medical Board of Australia, on graduation you will need to complete a year as a hospital intern. Internship allocations in South Australia are managed by South Australian Medical Education and Training.

In addition to pursuing further training in a wide range of medical specialities, graduates may work in research, public health or community aid around the world, or in health administration.

Professional accreditation/recognition

The Flinders University medical program has been re-accredited by the Australian Medical Council until 31 March 2025. Graduates of the Medicine degree will be registered with the Medical Board of Australia and permitted to practise medicine in Australia.

What you will study

First year

A typical first year may include:

core topics, practicals and workshops in the molecular basis of life, psychology of thriving and surviving and chemistry
core topics, practicals and workshops to develop your understanding of the human body, including, genetics, physiology, histology, and immunology
plus 1 to 2 option topics that will further develop your critical thinking and leadership skills

Second year

A typical second year may include:

core topics, practicals and workshops in biochemistry, interpersonal and interprofessional communication and point-of-care testing
you will undertake more advanced topics in human physiology and disease including haematology, pathophysiology and pharmacology
you will have further flexibility in your study plan to choose additional option topics that will build on the skills required to be a future medical practitioner

Third to sixth years

Typical third to sixth years may include:

themes in the interaction between doctor and patient including practicals and clinical placements
themes in knowledge of health and illness including practicals
themes in health professions and society, covering socially responsible health practice, clinical research foundations, and advanced studies
a theme introducing you to clinical practice, including practicals and a clinical placement
clinical performance topics including clinical and industry placements
option topics in research or coursework
a professional induction to clinical practice.

Practical experience

The degree provides you with practical experience that prepares you for the workforce.

Practicals and workshops in the clinical sciences degree prepare you for extensive clinical placements in the MD.
Team-based learning (TBL) and other active learning strategies ensure you drive your own learning, preparing you to face the challenges of medical practice.
Work with tutors, with patients, and in the Clinical Skills and Simulation Unit.
Work alongside practising clinicians as a medical student.
Undertake clinical placements in suburban Adelaide, the Northern Territory, and/or rural and remote communities.

What you will need

By the start of the second year of the Bachelor of Clinical Sciences you will be required to undergo a Criminal History Screening (CHS) carried out by the Department for Communities and Social Inclusion (DCSI) in South Australia.

Interstate and international students will need to provide a police check from their home state or country. This will be used in the first six months of the course and following that time, they will be required to apply for a CHS certificate issued by DCSI.

You will also need to adhere to the vaccination schedule for medical students mandated by SA Health for health workers.

Additional entry requirements

Applicants must also complete the University Clinical Aptitude Test for Australia and New Zealand (UCAT ANZ). Final ranking for a place is determined by combining scores from the applicant's Year 12 subject results that are used to calculate the ATAR (or equivalent) and their UCAT results.

It is expected that applicants will need to achieve an ATAR of 95 or above (after the addition of any relevant adjustment factors) to be competitive for a place. Ranking for offers of places will be based on a rank combining Year 12 subject results (90%) and a UCAT ANZ-derived score (10%), which will be based on results from five sections of the UCAT ANZ test (Verbal Reasoning, Decision Making, Quantitative Reasoning, Abstract Reasoning and Situational Judgment), with each section equally contributing to the UCAT ANZ-derived score.

Admission pathways

This course is only available to school leavers - i.e. applicants who are competing for entry on the basis of performance in either SACE Stage 2 studies, the International Baccalaureate or the interstate/overseas equivalent and do not have an academic record of study at higher education level (including Bachelor degrees from TAFE or RTOs).

Rural and remote sub-quotas

An annual subquota is available for applicants from rural and remote areas. To be considered for the rural and remote subquota applicants must apply to SATAC in the normal way.

Applicants must also, within 10 working days after submitting the SATAC application, submit a Statutory Declaration to SATAC which confirms that they have lived in non-metropolitan areas of Australia (Remoteness Classifications RA2 to RA5) for at least 5 consecutive years, or 10 years cumulatively, from birth (i.e. during any period of their life). Indigenous sub-quotas

An annual sub-quota of up to 5 places is available for Indigenous applicants. Such applicants are required to apply in the normal way. It is expected that applicants will need to achieve an ATAR of 90 or above (after the addition of eligible bonus points) to be considered a place in this sub-quota.

Applicants must also, within 10 working days after submitting the SATAC application, submit a Statutory Declaration to SATAC confirming the applicant is of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Island descent.

Applicants must achieve a minimum Year 12 ATAR of 95.00 or above or an equivalent score from an equivalent qualification to be considered.

Selection for a place in the course will be based on performance in the interview. Should there be more eligible applicants than places available for the course, selection will be based on a rank score combining their Year 12 (or equivalent) qualification score and their interview score.

Additional entry requirements

Applicants who meet the minimum Year 12 score or equivalent, will be invited to attend an interview.

The interview is semi-structured with a common set of scenarios and questions for all applicants. It is designed to assess qualities considered important both for success in medical school and in subsequent medical practice. These include:

Personal management and self-evaluation skills
Quality of motivation.
