After completing your studies in Law, Practical Legal Training (PLT) is the next step on your journey to becoming a lawyer. It will prepare you with the skills and knowledge required to enter the legal profession, and upon its completion, you will be awarded a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice (GDLP).
At Flinders University, our Practical Legal Training is delivered by the independent, not-for-profit Leo Cussen Centre for Law. You'll be able to complete this program in your final year of your Bachelor of Laws, fast-tracking your journey to admission.
You will graduate with an undergraduate and postgraduate parchment from Flinders University and Leo Cussen, and can seek admission to the Supreme Court to practise law in any state or territory of Australia.
With Leo Cussen, you'll become the Whole Lawyer.
Not all PLT experiences are made equal. Our PLT, delivered by Leo Cussen, will help you step into the legal profession with the confidence and skills to become a successful lawyer from day one.
Plus, your innovative training at Flinders Law will have prepared you to take part in the Leo Justice Lab, where you'll address a real access-to-justice problem.
Students completing our dual award Law program can expect to:
If you have completed an accredited Australian undergraduate law degree (LLB) or Juris Doctor (JD), you will need to complete a recognised Practical Legal Training Course (such as the Leo Cussen Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice [GDLP]) or equivalent.
Following this, you can apply to be admitted within your Australian state, noting that the requirements for admission are slightly different in each state. You must satisfy the admitting authority that you are a 'fit and proper' person, which involves disclosing certain things, such as fines and offences. After this, you will attend the Supreme Court for your admission ceremony, and be admitted as an Australian lawyer.
If you hold an overseas law degree, you will need to contact the admitting authority in the Australian state where you wish to practise. The admitting authority will assess your overseas qualification, and inform you of any additional study you must complete through an Australian institution. This might include university subjects, or a PLT course.

Definitely! You don't need to practise if you don't want to. There are many exciting career paths law graduates can take, and the opportunity to develop key practical skills is valuable regardless of which path you choose.
Your PLT will sharpen your advocacy skills, communication, file management and your understanding of risk and accountability. You'll enter the workforce confidently, with skills and knowledge valued by recruiters.
Yes, for eligible graduates.
That depends on which option you choose for your PLT. In SA, students have the choice between 'blended' and 'online' courses.
For blended courses, there are 10 face-to-face immersive days: 4 at the beginning of the course, 3 in the middle and 3 at the end, held in the Adelaide CBD.
For online courses, there are 8 immersives throughout the course, held via video conference.
Attendance at the immersive days are compulsory. If you miss any immersive days due to illness or any other extenuating circumstances, we can arrange for you to catch up.
Yes. While we do encourage students to seek their own professional placements, help is available if you need.
Leo Cussen can organise your placement on your behalf (additional fees apply. Please refer to the Leo Cussen website for further information.)
There are several conditions which determine whether you can complete PLT in Australia, such as your visa conditions, where you completed your law degree (if you already have one), and whether you are eligible to complete it in-person or online. For more information, contact us.
