Overview

This course is designed to equip you with the prerequisite knowledge and judgement to work as an intensive care paramedic within Australia and overseas.

The Graduate Diploma in Intensive Care Paramedicine aims to:

enable paramedics to acquire knowledge, attitudes and values relevant to the provision of intensive care treatment in the pre-hospital environment
provide opportunities for the personal and professional development of paramedics involved in the delivery of high acuity patient care in the pre-hospital environment
provide foundations of professional development covering the wider aspects of emergency clinical care in the prehospital environment
develop the critical thinking necessary to provide evidence-based judgement in the field of pre-hospital emergency clinical care.

The intensive care course equips paramedics with the knowledge required to support intensive care practice. Graduates from this course will be equipped with the knowledge, skills and judgement to successfully perform the role of Intensive Care Paramedic (or equivalent) within an Australasian ambulance service.

What you will study

The Graduate Diploma in Intensive Care Paramedicine is a 36-unit course consisting of lifespan-inclusive studies. The course aims to:

Enable paramedics to acquire knowledge, skills, attitudes and values relevant to the provision of intensive care treatment in the prehospital environment.
Provide opportunities for personal and professional development of paramedics working in the prehospital environment.
Provide foundations of professional development covering the wider aspects of emergency medical care in the prehospital environment.
Develop critical thinking necessary to provide evidence based judgement in the field of prehospital emergency medical care.

Graduate Diploma in Intensive Care Paramedicine

Entry requirements

Applicants must hold a Bachelor of Paramedicine (or equivalent), or possess a formal vocational ambulance qualification which permits authority to practice at a paramedic level (i.e. diploma or higher); and have a minimum of two years full-time equivalent practice at a paramedic level within the last six years; and are currently employed by an Australian ambulance service, and are a registered paramedic.

There is a significant clinical placement component as part of this program which students are required to undertake in South Australia at a range of placement providers. Interstate applicants must source their own placement providers of equivalence in conjunction with the WIL team and Course Coordinator if unable to attend opportunities in South Australia.
