challenge, and
a new country.

A daunting combination that required Flinders student Chloe to find her fearless.

Many people find comfort in routine, because let’s face it, change can be disruptive. Most are also lucky enough to have family and friends close by to share important life moments, successes and help us through challenging times. For Flinders student Chloe Tunstill, now in the 3^rd year of her Bachelor of Laws & Legal Practice degree, change has been a constant over the past few years. All that was familiar is now very far away, demanding courage, confidence and continued growth.

Moving from Singapore to Adelaide in Year 11, Chloe has had to adapt to a new country, new schools, new friends, new life and the challenges that come with undertaking one of the most innovative law degrees in Australia… all while contending with ADHD and Audio Processing Disorder (APD), which demand entirely different approaches to study and learning.

“I had a friendship group and all these support circles… like my family in Singapore, and suddenly I’m in Australia, a new country. And with the ADHD and APD I had to put in way more effort than anyone. I put in so many more hours. Like, if there's a piece of homework that took two hours, I'd take about four to six”.

Chloe has also been away from family in a time when the world has undergone a period of massive change. She has had to face a level uncertainty that has not been experienced by many before which has impacted not just her own life, but the lives of her entire generation. And while it has presented many challenges, it has also created a strong sense of community.

“One thing I really like about this generation is that I feel like we've been through a fair bit, but there seems to be a fighting spirit in everyone… there's a general consensus everyone can find comfort in each other, that we can uplift each other.”

Chloe’s drive and spirit are undeniable. It may take her longer to absorb information, but the effort and mechanisms Chloe has put in place, and the support offered by Flinders, ensure she can complete her work effectively and efficiently.

She’s not one to spend too much time relaxing on the couch; she prefers to use her additional energy. Understanding how to do so effectively led to her impressively high ATAR, and continues to help her succeed at Flinders.

Outside of her studies, a leadership role in Flinders Law Students’ Association (FLSA) and participating in Flinders’ law competitions take up much of her free time.

“I think I've always been a very driven person. I took on a leadership role as Competitions Director for FLSA, just because I need to always be doing something, and having that hyperactivity drives me in a way.”

Chloe’s journey echoes the very generation that founded Flinders in the 1960s. This was also a time of significant change, when young, politically and socially aware thinkers challenged convention and influenced the way we live today. Chloe and her fellow students are just as powerful and courageous - thriving post-pandemic and adapting to new technologies, new social movements, new ways of thinking, learning and living.

Flinders has always been fearless and supports its students to be also. Chloe and her peers are bravely facing the future together, shaping generations to come.
