Overview

The Examinations Office conducts examinations at the end of each semester, as well as supplementary examinations in July (semester 1 topics)  and January or February of the following year (semester 2 topics).

Examinations are normally held in the Sports Centre or the Sturt Gymnasium. An interactive campus map is available so please familiarise yourself with the location of the examination venue as well as the closest car parks and bus stops before examination day.

Examination dates for 2008 topics

23 June - 6 July (Semester 1 topics)
23-26 July (Semester 1 supplementary exams)
17 - 30 November (Semester 2 topics)

Semester 2 supplementary exams will be held in mid-February 2009 - dates are to be confirmed. The provisional timetable for semester 2 2008 is now available online in the Student System, which can be accessed via iFlinders.  Students will be notified via e-mail when the final timetable is available and are required to check this.

Alternative arrangements

Students who require alternative exam conditions on the basis of a medical condition or disability need to apply at least 4 weeks prior to the start of the examination period.  Applications received after that time cannot be guaranteed equal consideration.

Students will need to provide documentation regarding the nature of the medical condition/disability.  Applications must be made through a counsellor, doctor, or Disability Liaison Officer (DLO) at the Health and Counselling Service (ph 8201 2118).  If the condition is permanent or likely to continue for some time, students can negotiate an Access Plan with a DLO.

NESB cards

Students who were born outside Australia, speak a language other than English at home and came to Australia less than 10 years ago may be eligible for extra an 10 minutes per hour in examinations.

You will automatically be sent an NESB (Non-English Speaking Background) card in June if you meet these criteria. You must bring this card to each examination along with your student ID card to be eligible. You are also allowed to use a bilingual dictionary (however electronic dictionaries are not permitted).

If you did not receive an NESB card and believe you should have, you can check the details that you have registered on the student system at iFlinders. You need to check the following items:

  • the year you first entered Australia (must be less than 10 years ago)
  • the language you speak at home
  • the country you were born in.

If these are incorrect you will need to update them and advise the Examinations Office immediately.

Timetable

It is your responsibility to check your examination timetable. Students can view their personalised timetable and room allocation in the Student System via iFlinders. Please view the "my examinations" menu for details of your upcoming exams.

A supplementary examination will not be granted on the grounds that a student made an error in reading the examination timetable.

General examination information

Examinations are held over three sessions per day Monday-Saturday. Examinations normally commence at 8:45am, 1:15pm and 5:45pm. Start times vary for supplementary examinations.

You should aim to arrive at the examination venue 30 minutes before the commencement of your examination.

Students who arrive late are not permitted to make up that time at the end of the examination.

Students arriving more than 30 mins after the commencement of writing time will not be allowed into the examination room.

Items permitted in the exam room

All students are permitted to take the following items into the exam room:

  • writing materials, eg pens, eraser in a clear pencil case
  • non-programmable calculator
  • tissues
  • water in a clear bottle with the label removed
  • wallet/purse (must be placed under desk)
  • keys (must be placed under desk)

Students with a valid Non-English Speaking Background (NESB) card are also permitted to bring a non-technical dictionary.

In some examinations students are allowed to bring selected additional materials into the room, eg programmable calculators, text book, etc. You will be notified if you are allowed to use these.

Items not permitted under any circumstances are listed below:

  • bags including handbags
  • food
  • mobile phones, mp3 players, pdas, laptops and other electronic devices
  • library books (these are not permitted even in open book exams).

Students who bring any of the above items into the examination room will be reported under the University's Policy on Academic Integrity.

It is recommended that students leave all valuables at home on the day of examinations as students will not be permitted to take any additional items into the exam room. Due to OH&S restrictions, the University is no longer able to store students' belongings during examinations.

Final results

You can view final results online by logging into iFlinders. If your grade is followed by '/M' or '/A' (eg P/M or F/A) this means you have been awarded supplementary assessment.
