Healthy Communities Health Development & Social Capital Project - Western Suburbs of Adelaide (1999)

This study, funded by the National Health & Medical Research Council, has examined what type of activities people are involved in, ranging from civic participation to social participation, both informal and formal. Several aspects have been explored such as which groups in the community are more likely to participate and why, barriers to participation, and perceptions about the capacity to influence decisions. Another area this project has studied is the links between community participation and the health of individuals, as well as the health of the wider community. At the time this study was conceived there was a growing interest in the notion of social capital, particularly in its relevance to health promotion, and community development. Components of social capital including networks, levels of trust and reciprocity were also, therefore, explored as part of this study.
