'Not Just a Doctor' is a project by the South Australian Community Health Research Unit and the Discipline of Public Health, Flinders University of SA, funded through the General Practice Evaluation Program. Three community health centres in the Western Suburbs of metropolitan Adelaide participated in this project - The Parks Community Health Service, Port Adelaide Community Health Service and Dale Street Women's Health Centre, all of which now come under the umbrella of Adelaide Central Community Health Service. They provide services to a population with generally more acute needs than the rest of Adelaide, primarily as a result of socio-economic circumstances, and the significant number of Aboriginal people and migrants who speak a language other than English.

The objectives of the study were to identify people's reasons for choosing doctors' services in women's and community health centres, and to document and analyse their experiences of, and perspectives on, medical practice in these centres. The findings of this project confirm an earlier SACHRU/DPH study which reported that there are two models of primary health care in South Australia. These two models are fee-for-service general practice and publicly funded multi-disciplinary community health services.
The majority of participants in this project strongly supported the value of medical services in W&CHCs as an alternative to the fee-for-service models. They stressed both the value of one-to-one consultations with doctors and the wider contribution to the health and well being of the community. The report includes details of the methodology and findings. It concludes with a discussion of the implications for services users and service providers, and recommendations for the future.
