Reshaping curricula: integrating culturally diverse/mental health online content to prepare work ready health professionals
This website showcases media rich online resources which have been developed as part of the 'Reshaping curricula: integrating culturally diverse/mental health online content to prepare work ready health professionals' project. The resources are aimed at undergraduate health students focussing on mental health and wellbeing for people from Indigenous, migrant and Chinese cultural groups.
Through the authentic stories which form the core focus of the resources, students will better understand the negative impacts stereotyping and stigma have on people with mental health issues. The resources developed by this project are free and available for use in tertiary programs.
The 2-year project (2014-2015) was funded by the Office for Learning and Teaching and involved four Australian universities (Flinders University, the University of Newcastle, Edith Cowan University and Central Queensland University). It is led by Professor Eimear Muir-Cochrane, Chair of Nursing (Mental Health Nursing) Flinders University, School of Nursing & Midwifery.
Close collaboration with community stakeholders ensured the resources were culturally appropriate and highly relevant. The Poche Centre for Indigenous Health and Wellbeing, Migrant Resource Centre, SA Health and Chinese Welfare Services SA all provided cultural guidance to the project.
Facilitators can either link directly to the resources or embed parts of each journey into their own learning systems. Instructions for this, licensing and acknowledgements are provided in the Resources for facilitators section (at the end of each journey) and the facilitator guide.
The educational materials have been developed as follows:
- Justin O'Dowd a 20 year old Indigenous man with diabetes and complex mental and physical health problems
- Shannon Bycroft a 20 year old Indigenous woman who becomes unwell after the birth of her first baby
- Sui Fang an 80 year old Chinese woman who becomes increasingly confused
- Migrant and refugee resilience and wellbeing
