CALL FOR APPLICATIONS FOR THE SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM 2018

PURPOSE

The Summer Research Internship Program is intended to provide research experience during the summer break for Flinders undergraduate students currently enrolled in the Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) program who will be entering the honours year in 2018.

The program is intended to enhance understanding of current research programs in the School of Psychology, and give the student practical experience and encouragement to consider a postgraduate career in research.

WHO CAN APPLY?

Applicants must be full-time students in the Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) program who will have completed their 3rd year of study in 2017 and who expect to be entering into honours for 2018 in the College of Education, Psychology and Social Work.

THE RESEARCH

Although it might form part of a larger program of work, the research will be an independent and self-contained study that has its own specified aims and objectives. All research conducted is subject to relevant legislation and regulations (e.g., ethical approval, Health and Safety, etc.).

The internship funding must not be used to support research that will form part of the honours thesis project in 2018.

THE FUNDING

A stipend of $2000 will be provided for a 6 week internship. If further support is required it must come from other sources. This stipend is exclusively for the student and does not cover any necessary research expenses, which must be provided by the supervisor.

APPLICATIONS

Students must first contact academic members of staff to find a potential supervisor (see below for a list of available staff members). The student must then work with the supervisor to develop a research project. Applications that do not have a member of staff who has agreed to supervise the student will not be accepted.

There are no application forms. Students must submit a research proposal on no more than one side of A4 paper (minimum 10pt font, with margins of at least 2.5cm), as well as a copy of their academic transcripts. Students are expected to discuss the project with their potential supervisor, but it is important that the project proposal be written by the student. The following details must be included:

  • Name, ID number, degree course, and Flinders email address
  • Title of the research project
  • Background
  • Aims and objectives
  • The academic value of the project
  • The value of the project to the student

The research proposal and academic transcripts must be accompanied by a signed statement from the research supervisor that guarantees:

  • that the student is qualified for the internship. The supervisor should certify that the student fulfills the regulations, and include a statement regarding the merit of the student
  • to provide research supervision and any necessary infrastructural support
  • to provide the necessary financial resources to enable the work to be completed

An electronic copy of the research proposal and the academic transcripts, and the paper copy of the signed supervisor statement, should be submitted to Megan Bartlett. The deadline for submission is Monday, 23rd of October, 2017. Applications received after this date, or incomplete applications, will not be accepted.

CONTACTS

General enquiries should be directed to Megan Bartlett.

My interests include the reconstructive nature of memory (e.g., subjective experience of remembering, false memory), strategic regulation of accuracy (e.g., knowing when to act on a piece of information or when to keep quiet), and judgment and decision making across a variety of situations. One current interest in our lab is understanding how the context of a situation affects strategic regulation; for example, whether punishing people for reporting wrong information works better than rewarding people for reporting correct information.

Another current interest is understanding anomalistic belief (i.e., belief in the paranormal, extra-terrestrials, etc.). Previous work in this area is limited, but typically indicates there are performance differences between people who hold such beliefs and those who do not. Our work focuses on understanding these differences, as well as how other variables may be related to anomalistic belief (e.g., religiosity, schizotypy, belief in complementary and alternative medicine, etc.).

My research focuses on establishing the role of genetics and epigenetics in psychological outcomes, and how environmental risk/protective factors mediate their influence through our biology (i.e. via epigenetic change. Understanding how it is the environment interacts with our genetics to either increase or decrease risk of poor mental health). Epigenetics provides a possible mechanism by which the environment can interact with our genome.  For the summer internship we will focus on a project that will aim to pull apart the role of the MTHFR genetic polymorphism and its relationship to mental health outcomes, including potential mediation by diet. This will be done via a systematic literature review, and possibly meta-analysis.

Some of the terms and ideas may sound intimidating, particularly if you have not yet had exposure to behavioural genetic research, however I will provide information and resources for gaps in knowledge, and the appropriate support to develop required skills.
