Considering a research higher degree?

If you are considering a PhD or Masters in the discipline of History and International Relations at Flinders, the following information will assist you in working through your preliminary enquiries.

Step 1: Getting information

Begin with the Flinders University study a research higher degree webpage

Step 2: Determining eligibility

It is important to determine if you meet the eligibility requirements. If you do not meet the requirements for entry to the PhD program you may be eligible for entry to the Master of Arts program.

Step 3: Establishing an area of interest

It is important that the school is able to offer supervision in your general area of interest.

You will find details of staff interests/research on the school research page or a staff member's individual webpage.

Step 4: Contacting History and International Relations

Now it is time to contact us and provide details of your intended research.

Please forward a research proposal, your cv, and a copy of your academic transcript to the School Manager by email or post (School Manager, History and International Relations, College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences, Flinders University, GPO Box 2100, Adelaide SA 5001).

The proposal should be up to five pages long and cover the following:

  • your intended research topic
  • its significance and justification
  • your research questions
  • the research methods you are considering
  • a brief literature review to indicate the research area and debates to which you are seeking to contribute

This will help us decide which staff members are most appropriate to supervise you. Finding an appropriate supervisor is crucial for both your application for admission, and the overall success of your research project. If you have had any communication with staff regarding your research, please include that also.

We will review your proposal and determine whether we can provide suitable supervision of your work. The School Manager will then contact you to advise the outcome.  If the School is able to provide appropriate supervision, you will be invited to submit an application.
