Our research examines Australia in an international context both in terms of historical and contemporary politics and policies:

  • Australia's foreign, defence and trade policies 
  • Australian development assistance and relations the South
  • US - Australian relations 
  • Australia as a country of immigration and asylum
  • Australia's relations with Africa.

Asia Asia

We work in a range of countries with a strong focus on Southeast Asia (especially Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore), East Asia (especially China, Taiwan and Japan), and India. The School currently hosts the editor-in-chief of the Asian Studies Review, the flagship publication of the Asian Studies Association of Australia.

Europe Europe

Our research in Europe is focused on imperial Britain and its global legacy, imperial and modern Germany, and the colonial and contemporary politics of the Eastern Mediterranean region, and modern Russia.
