The medal was presented to Jerry on October 18 at JK80, an informal seminar to honour his upcoming birthday, at the Institute of Information Theory and Automation (UTIA) in Prague. For over 15 years Jerry has spent at least two months annually visiting UTIA, one of the research institutes of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, working and co-authoring papers with Prof. Jan Flusser, Dr Bara Zitova, Dr Filip Sroubek and others in the Department of Image Processing.

The Bernard Bolzano Medal was founded by the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences in 1965, in order to recognise scientific achievement in Mathematics. Since 1995, it has been awarded by the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic to distinguished mathematicians world-wide who have made an outstanding contribution to the development of their research field, with particular emphasis on recognizing their co-operation with Czech and Slovak scientists.
