Carrick Awards

The Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC) for Teaching and Learning has 3 types of awards designed to foster and acknowledge excellent teaching in higher education.

At Flinders, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) coordinates and manages all nominations for the Carrick Awards for Australian University Teaching.

Winners are announced annually in November at Parliament House, Canberra.

Citations for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning

There are 210 awards valued at $10 000 each.

Closing date for submissions to Carrick is 9 May 2008.

Citations recognise and reward the diverse contributions that individuals and teams make to the quality of student learning. Citations are awarded to people who:

  • have made a significant contribution to student learning in a specific area of responsibility over a sustained period
  • are widely recognised for their achievements within the nominating institution
  • have received strong institutional endorsement.

Both academic and general staff are eligible to be nominated.

Awards for Teaching Excellence

There are 26 awards of $25 000 each.

There are 8 categories of Awards for Teaching Excellence:

  • 5 discipline categories
  • 1 category for Indigenous Education (Neville Bonner Award/s)
  • 1 Early Career category
  • a Priority Area category (the Priority Area for 2008/9 is 'work intergrated learning').

The Prime Minister's Award for the Australian University Teacher of the Year

There is 1 award of $50 000.

One of the 27 nominees for the Award for Teaching Excellence is presented with the Prime Minister’s Award for the Australian University Teacher of the Year.

Awards for Programs that Enhance Learning

There are 14 awards of $25 000 each.

Closing date for submissions to Carrick is 11 July 2008.

The Awards for Programs that Enhance Learning recognise learning and teaching support programs and services that make an outstanding contribution to the quality of student learning and the quality of the student experience of higher education.
