Imagine if you could test a patient for a medical condition, obtain a result within minutes and provide treatment immediately. That's what we do and it's called Point-of-Care Testing.
Point-of-care testing is pathology testing carried out in a clinical setting at the time of patient consultation, generating a test result that is used to make an immediate informed clinical decision.
We work collaboratively with national and international partners to improve health care and improve access to pathology testing and improve health outcomes.
We're working to translate the national research and teaching expertise in the field of community-based POCT to other national and international audiences, and as a result, build the capacity of rural and remote communities globally (particularly Indigenous communities) to develop solutions to improve both health service delivery and patient outcomes in their communities.
“
Point-of-Care Testing is accurate, convenient and patient focussed.
This is why it’s one of the fastest growing pathology industry sectors. The worldwide market value for POCT is expected to reach $30.9 billion by 2024.
”
POCT technology and devices are being developed and improved every year, making them more portable, cost effective and analytically sound.
The Bachelor of Medical Science offers the topic: Point-of-Care Testing: Application Management and Effectiveness, as a full semester topic for third year students.
