In 2023, Flinders University said goodbye to former Chancellor Stephen Gerlach AM, and welcomed John Hood as the University’s seventh Chancellor.
In welcoming John Hood as the University’s seventh Chancellor, we embrace not only a distinguished leader, but also a proud alumnus deeply rooted in the essence of Flinders. John’s commitment to our values ignites a new chapter for the institution filled with promise and vision, and we eagerly anticipate the guidance he will bring.
2023 was nothing short of extraordinary for Flinders University. Our dedication to research, education, and community impact propelled Flinders University to new heights, reaffirming our commitment to change lives and change the world. Our researchers have once again showcased their brilliance with research income continuing to grow and exceeding $120 million for the first time in our history.
At a time when the higher education landscape faces multiple challenges, the continued success of Flinders University demonstrates the value of strong leadership and gives us confidence that the University will continue to build its reputation as a leader in education and research.
In education, we have maintained our position as a leader in providing exceptional student experience, as evidenced by our top rankings in learner engagement, learning resources, skills development, student support, and teaching quality.
Our partnership with the Tonsley Technical College, co-located with Flinders’ Factory of the Future, signifies our commitment to driving innovation and workforce development in critical sectors. Moreover, our tri-nation AUKUS partnerships with The University of Manchester and The University of Rhode Island underscore our commitment to excellence on a global scale, as we bring the world’s best nuclear education to our students, while playing a critical part in supporting Australia’s sovereignty.
Flinders University finds itself in the strongest position it has ever been, poised to embrace the outcomes of the Australian Universities Accord. Our impact across South Australia and Northern Territory positions us uniquely to contribute to the Accord’s objectives and advance our mission of changing lives and changing the world.
I extend a heartfelt thank you to former Chancellor Stephen Gerlach AM, whose unwavering support and advocacy have been the bedrock upon which Flinders University has flourished.
