What you will study

This 5 year combined degree includes:

the opportunity to study with student engineers of all disciplines, completing core topics in environmental science, engineering design, engineering programming, engineering physics and materials, marine science, evolution, biological diversity and mathematics. Commonality in first year means that you can transfer between engineering disciplines easily at the end of the year.
topics in hydrology, ecology, mechanics, geology and geomechanics, engineering mathematics, electronics and geographical information systems
advanced topics in waste management, fluid mechanics, ecohydrology, mechanics and structures, geology and geomechanics, environmental and global climate change and human health including microbes and toxins
studies in sustainable engineering, hydrochemistry, hydraulics and water engineering, project management, geology and geomechanics and other areas
field studies and an engineering work placement
a major engineering honours thesis allowing high-performing students to progress to a higher degree by research
a capstone topic in your chosen major, further studies exploring practicing as a professional engineer and environmental scientist and a selection of electives in allied science and engineering areas.

Please note: While you can complete both degrees in 5 years, you will be admitted to both degrees. So if you decide that one or the other is not for you, you can choose to complete just one of them.

Practical experience

The combined Bachelor of Engineering (Environmental) (Honours) with Bachelor of Science (Environmental Science) degree will provide you with extensive practical experience that prepares you for the workforce. Through our extensive industry links, you will undertake a 12-week industry placement program of structured work experience with a local, national or international organisation and develop practical professional skills and knowledge. You will also undertake an applied environmental practice topic in fourth year.

Your career

Environmental engineers are problem-solvers who design solutions to a range of hazards from airborne and waterborne diseases, water and air pollution, wastewater management and recycling. They implement environmental engineering law and assess the environmental impact of proposed projects.

Environmental scientists focuses on understanding, monitoring and improving the environment. They use their knowledge and skills to solve environmental issues and problems.

Opportunities exist across a wide range of organisations and government, from mining and resources through to local, state and federal government.

Accreditation/professional recognition:

All of Flinders current Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) degrees are fully accredited by Engineers Australia at the level of professional engineer. This new degree will be presented for accreditation in April. Professional engineering courses accredited by Engineers Australia are recognised internationally under the Washington Accord. Graduates meet the academic requirements for attaining chartered professional engineering status.
