Flinders University is very proud of the strong relationship that has been built up and maintained over the last 20 years with an elite educational institution such as Nankai University.
To mark this special and significant milestone, our anniversary publication and video celebrate the 20 year partnership in postgraduate education between Flinders University in Australia and Nankai University in China.
My colleagues from both Flinders and Nankai have shared their thoughts on the strength and importance of the transnational partnership, how it has developed over the 20 years and how the two universities have worked together to create a close and effective working relationship that is built on mutual trust and respect.
Featuring profiles of graduates from the three joint programs – the Master of Arts (International Relations in Economy and Trade) (MAIRET) commencing in 2000, the Master of Hospital Administration (MHA) commencing in 2003 and more recently the Master of Educational Leadership and Management (MELM) which commenced in 2012 – these graduates share the value of this established Sino-Foreign Joint Education Program and the impact it has had on their careers.
Thank you to all those who have contributed from both universities to produce our anniversary publication and video and here’s to another 20 years and more of our partnership.

From humble beginnings 20 years ago, this important international collaboration is recognised by both of our Universities as being especially important in expanding educational opportunities that underpin the social structure and economic development of China and Australia. Our mutual determination to succeed has been fundamental to the ongoing success of our joint achievements.
The strength of such enduring qualities through two decades of shared achievements are the foundation on which a lasting partnership is built – and through celebrating this, our two Universities know that we can look forward to enduring and mutual success.
The exciting application of leadership theory and practical experiences has enabled these Masters graduates to emerge as potential leaders in Chinese society, equipped with the skills, confidence and mindset to have a global impact. They are ready to make a difference in the world, and to “transform the lives of individuals and communities”, which is the very motto that motivates our College.
This is a fascinating area of teaching, as the students are opening themselves up to challenging thoughts and perceptions. We introduce them to the main schools of thought about international relations to explain events of international economic and political consequence, and to illustrate how diverse ways of analysing the world can apply in different contexts.
Sustainable health development is important for every country. For a hospital to develop in a sustainable way, it needs scientific and standardised management systems.
We want to provide students with opportunities to learn about good practices in countries outside China, and provide a good learning experience that will benefit them in their work.
Since 2012, I’ve seen great potential for cultural translation – how to mesh two cultures and introduce new ways to all the parties involved.
It opens up innovation because students clearly see the changes between cultures, and it stimulates new ideas that emerge.
This sits especially well in fostering doctorate research. In education, we have to continue this process of bridge building, so that theory effectively connects to changing practices.
