Established in 2013, the annual Professor Michael Kidd AM Scholarship supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students at Flinders University to become doctors, nurses and allied health professionals.
"As a graduate of Flinders University, and a former member of the academic staff, I am pleased to establish a scholarship to support an Indigenous student studying at Flinders University to become a health professional," says Professor Michael Kidd AM.
Professor Kidd now stands at the pivot of Australia’s public health response to the COVID-19 pandemic in his role as Australia’s Deputy Chief Medical Officer and the federal Department of Health’s Principal Medical Advisor.
In 2020, in recognition of the serious economic hardships inflicted by COVID-19 restrictions and a need to foster the next generation of health professionals through difficult times, Professor Kidd supported a second student through the annual Professor Michael Kidd AM Scholarship.
"If people really want to make a difference to something that stretches far beyond their lifetime, then I would urge them to endow or support a scholarship like this," says Professor Kidd.
"It not only helps students through their journey, but ultimately it touches the communities they go on to work with. These health professionals serve as great role models for the next generation of Indigenous kids who look up and say, wow, if uncle or aunty from our community can become a doctor or a nurse or an optician or a dietician, then I can do that too."
Scholarships play a fundamental role in reducing financial pressures to enable students to focus on their studies and complete their degree.
