It might come as a shock to some people, but sometimes teenagers and their parents (or caregivers) don’t see eye-to-eye, which might be fine when choosing which Netflix series to binge but can be tricky when discussing something as important as study and career choices.
Getting professional advice and information based on future student’s interests, strengths and ambitions is the best way to resolve the tensions that sometimes arise and ensure all options are considered. That’s where Flinders a face-to-face appointment with one of our friendly Student Advisers come in.
Mum Peta and daughter Emma (Year 11 student) are both on the road towards university study. And when we say ‘both’, that’s exactly what we mean. While Emma will be the one going to uni, as a parent Peta will help Emma decide which degree and which university is right for her.
“Trying to work out what potential study and ultimately career I might like to pursue after Year 12 has been quite overwhelming.”
Emma (Year 11 Student)
As uni grows closer, the decisions and choices that need to be made become complex, and the support and guidance of parents and caregivers can make an incredible difference.
“Guiding your children through the time in their life where they have to start thinking about their future careers and study pathways after Year 12 can be quite challenging to navigate.”
Peta (parent, Year 11 Student)
But sometime there are questions that you just can’t answer. That’s where you need a great support team like the one at Flinders. A face-to-face appointment with one of our friendly Student Advisers gives both parent and student the chance to not only ask the questions that are important to both of you, but to get information and advice that you may have never considered.
“Meeting with Flinders University has been extremely helpful in exploring career options that incorporate my passions and fields of interest as well as some really helpful guidance on selecting subjects to take in year 12. They introduced me to a wide range of careers that I hadn’t even considered previously.”
Emma (Year 11 Student)
“Being able to access a personal one-on-one session with Flinders University has been a game-changer for my child. Being able to discuss her general interests, the subjects she is considering for Year 12 and the types of things she is looking for in a future career with an expert who was able to open her mind to career paths she didn’t even know about has given her the much-needed direction and confidence she needed.”
Peta (parent, Year 11 Student)
We recommend booking a 1-on-1 as early as Year 10 to get some advice on career direction to help with Year 11 and 12 subject selection.
In Years 11 or 12, you may have questions about Year 12 results and uni offers, you may want to find out more about facilities and services, or simply get a better understanding of the support that Flinders offers new students.
Adults may want to understand their university pathway options or how to go about changing career.
“I highly recommend this experience as it has given me some really solid direction and confidence in choosing subjects for year 12 which is such a relief.”
