What is Work Integrated Learning (WIL)?

When it comes to landing a career in computer science, data science, information technology, engineering or scientific fields - practical experience is important, and practical placements can give you the edge you need to succeed.

Flinders’s WIL placements will improve your employability by helping you better understand the day-to-day skills employers in these areas are looking for, and by giving you the chance to gain real experience in a workplace environment, directly related to the degree you’re studying.

You might take on a 12 or 20-week work placement or internship with an industry leader, gain hands-on experience through field education, or get involved in projects with industry or community organisations.

Your practical, real-world WIL experience will help you gain the edge.

Meet George Funnell
Bachelor of Engineering (Electronics) (Honours)

George Funnell spent 20 weeks working in SAGE's smart transport department - his first experience working with electronic engineering in industry. Keen to apply the knowledge he accrued at Flinders University to real-world applications, George was able to develop his practical skills by assisting engineers to solve real transport problems. He particularly enjoyed the project development stages, and seeing his work come to life. George is also now doing his honours project with SAGE.

Meet Maddison O’Toole
Bachelor of Engineering (Software) (Honours)

Maddisan O'Toole conducted her 20 week placement with SAGE's manufacturing team where she was tasked with developing the software integration for SAGE's new vertical storage lift. This allowed her to increase her software engineering knowledge and test her skills through building a software interface. During her 20 week placement Maddisan also won the Flinders University 'Most Outstanding Showcase Project' for Information Technology and Software Engineering!

I’ve been able to live in another country - which in its own is a fantastic experience – and have also been able to gain a lot of value through the work placement itself. From this experience, I have grown more confident in my skills - particularly in managing time, problem solving, and team work as well as obtained a greater understanding of the process behind developing a product for commercial applications.
