The combined degrees program of Bachelor of Laws and Legal Practice (Honours)/Bachelor of Science requires the completion of a minimum of 216 units of study and a Bachelor of Laws (Honours)/Bachelor of Science a minimum of 216 units.

For admission to the program, students must apply for admission to Bachelor of Laws and Legal Practice (Honours) combined degrees through SATAC.

Eligible students who decide to take up the combined degrees program in a subsequent year will be required to apply through SATAC, or via internal university transfer, for admission to the Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Science (Animal Behaviour), Bachelor of Science (Aquaculture), Bachelor of Science (Biodiversity and Conservation), Bachelor of Science (Environmental Science), Bachelor of Science (Forensic and Analytical Chemistry), Bachelor of Science (Marine Biology) or Bachelor of Science (Nanotechnology).

Students enrolled in a combined degree program must complete the full program specified within the combined program for each degree before they can graduate with either award.

Students who commence, but subsequently do not wish to complete, the combined degrees program may be eligible to transfer to either the Bachelor of Laws and Legal Practice (Honours) or Bachelor of Science and to receive credit for some, or all, of the topics already completed.

Prerequisites and Assumed Knowledge for Science Specialisations

There are no formal prerequisites for the specialisation in Biodiversity and Conservation but a knowledge of Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry to Year 11 is desirable.

Successful completion of SACE Stage 2 Chemistry or the equivalent is required for entry to the specialisation in Forensic and Analytical Chemistry.

There are no formal prerequisites for the specialisation in Marine Biology, but knowledge of Mathematics and/or Physics to SACE Year 11 level is desirable.

Successful completion of SACE Year 12 Chemistry will allow entry into the specialisation in Nanotechnology Biomedical Nanotechnology stream.

There are no prerequisites or assumed knowledge for the other specialisations.

Program of study

To qualify for the combined degrees program of Bachelor of Laws and Legal Practice (Honours)/Bachelor of Science, a student must complete the following program of study with a grade of P or NGP or better in each topic:

  • a law component of 135 units for the Bachelor of Laws and Legal Practice (Honours) which consists of 90 units of core topics, 22.5 units of Legal Practice Training, 9 units of option topics, and 13.5 units of dissertation or 135 units for the Bachelor of Laws (Honours) which consists of 90 units of core topics, 22.5 units of Year 4 Option topics, 9 units of Year 3 Option topics, and 13.5 units of dissertation [see Bachelor of Laws and Legal Practice (Honours) or Bachelor of Laws (Honours) entry for further information]

Plus an 81 unit Bachelor of Science component comprising:

  • 27 units of First Year Science topics; and
  • 54 units of upper level topics including either a major and a minor or an extended major or a specialisation# from the programs listed below.

#Specialisations or the double specialisation have different admission requirements to other programs of study available in the Bachelor of Science. In order to undertake a specialisation or double specialisation students must be admitted to the specialisation or double specialisation program.

Not all topics are necessarily available in a given year.

No more than 45 units of First Year level topics may be included in the degree.

** Students cannot undertake the stream in Environmental Forensics in the combined degree. Students interested in this combination should take the two degrees concurrently.

*** Students cannot undertake the stream in Quantum Nanostructures in the combined degree. Students interested in this combination should take the two degrees concurrently.

^ These Science programs have been phased out from 2011 and are not available for commencing students. Students who commenced prior to 2011 in these programs may complete according to their original Program of Study.

^^ The Engineering Science major is not accredited by Engineers Australia. There is no honours program available in Engineering Science.

^^^ Students may not take both the Mathematics major and the Statistics minor instead they should choose the extended major in Mathematics.
