The Graduate Certificate in Research (Business) is an 18-unit program which is offered by the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences.

It articulates with the 36-unit Graduate Diploma in Research (Business) and the sequentially developed topics allow progression through the two awards.

Admission requirements

Applicants must normally hold an approved degree or an equivalent qualification from an approved tertiary institution. However, the Faculty Board may, under certain circumstances and subject to specific conditions, admit others who can show evidence of fitness for candidature.

Applicants with an undergraduate degree only, must demonstrate a GPA equivalent of at least 5.25.

Applicants must normally demonstrate competence in the area they wish to pursue research, (eg their major) through achieving the equivalent of 18 units of DN or better in that area. Applicants who hold a coursework Masters degree in addition to their undergraduate degree, must demonstrate a GPA equivalent of at least 5.25 in their coursework Masters degree.

Students whose first degree was not taught in the English language are required to demonstrate proficiency in English (IELTS of 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each section, TOEFL of 580 with 50 in each section).

Course aims

The course is designed for graduates with a Bachelors degree in a business-related area from a recognised university, but no Honours or other research experience. The course aims to develop students’ understanding of research issues and methods, including ethical responsibilities and regulations. Students will develop a high level problem solving, analytical and writing skills.

Learning outcomes

Graduates will be able to:

  • Apply specialised subject matter knowledge and research skills, to an area of business related research and/or professional practice.
  • Prepare a research proposal, conduct a literature review and produce a piece of academic research that prepares them for more detailed study in business research at the Masters level

To qualify for the Graduate Certificate in Research (Business) a student must complete 18 units with a grade of P or NGP or better in each topic, according to the following program of study.
