A student may complete a major sequence of 36 units in French by completing two Year 1 topics (9 units), two Year 2 topics (9 units) and two Year 3 topics (9 units) plus two additional topics (9 units) from the Year 2 or Year 3 topics listed in the program of study below.
A student may complete a minor sequence of 22.5 units in French by completing two Year 1 topics (9 units), two Year 2 topics (9 units) plus and additional topic (4.5 units) from the Year 2 or Year 3 Topics listed in the program of study below.
French is not offered as an extended major.
Course aims
The French major aims to:
- foster the development of proficient levels of linguistic, socio-cultural and communicative competencies
- expose students to a wide body of specific and cross-disciplinary knowledge relative to linguistic and cultural knowledges and practices (grammar, literature, translation, cinema, etc)
- develop students' ability to analyse and respond to written and visual texts of varying difficulty
- develop students' awareness of local and global communities of French speakers
- develop students' awareness of, and reflection about, language and culture diversity locally and globally
- train students to form broad conceptual understandings of issues relating to cross- and intercultural communication
- provide opportunities for metacognitive training to enhance language acquisition and maximise opportunities to progress in language learning within and beyond the classroom.
Learning outcomes
At the completion of the major, students are expected to:
- be able to communicate at a proficient level of competence in French
- be able to demonstrate broad knowledge of French Cultural Studies
- have developed critical understanding of key cultural aspects of French studies
- be aware and have gained an understanding of the "Francophone sphere" and how it is positioned in the world from linguistic, cultural and political perspectives
- be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills in relation to cross- and inter-cultural communication and be better equipped to interact in a global, yet multilingual and multicultural world
- have developed understanding and respect for local and global cultural and linguistic diversity
- have developed an understanding of themselves as languages learners and users.
