A student may complete a major sequence of 36 units in Indonesian by completing two Year 1 topics (9 units), two Year 2 topics (9 units) and two Year 3 topics (9 units) plus two additional topics (9 units) from the Year 2 or Year 3 topics listed in the program of study below.
A student may complete a minor sequence of 22.5 units in Indonesian by completing two Year 1 topics (9 units), two Year 2 topics (9 units) plus an additional topic (4.5 units) from the Year 2 or Year 3 topics listed in the program of study below.
Indonesian is only offered as an extended major in the Bachelor of Languages.
Course aims
The major aims to produce graduates who have:
- Indonesian communications skills which are appropriate for a range of contexts and situations
- a high level of competency in the four core fields of Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing
- an understanding of key political, social, economic, environmental and cultural issues in Indonesia.
Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of the Indonesian major graduates should be able to:
- communicate and interact in a professional and culturally aware manner through a satisfactory level of written and oral skills
- apply professional expertise to policy advice and formulation, including associated research and report-writing
- engage in business, international development, or government activities with, and in, Indonesia
- undertake further specialist qualifications for teaching of Indonesian language or professional translation.
In addition to the generic skills and range of knowledge developed in their overall degree, graduates are expected to be able to:
- demonstrate language skills and associated socio-cultural knowledge and conceptual understandings that equip them for employment in organisations either in Indonesia or with an Indonesian focus
- engage cross culturally in a range of social and workplace settings
- demonstrate knowledge of the developments which have shaped, and continue to shape, Australia's relationship with Indonesia.
