The report

In October 2018 the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released the most comprehensive report on climate change ever made.  The report aims to strengthen the global response to the very real threat of climate change, by analysing the impacts of global warming of 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels.

The report details changes in the Earth’s climate system already measurable due to global warming (e.g. sea level rise) and the changes we should expect in the likely event that a global mean surface temperature (GMST) rise of 1.5 °C is reached between 2030 and 2052.

According to the report, these changes include “increases in: mean temperatures in most land and sea regions, hot extremes in most inhabited regions, heavy precipitation in several regions, and the probability of drought and precipitation deficits in some regions”. As emphasised in the report, “some impacts may be long-lasting or irreversible, such as the loss of some ecosystems”.

It is a stark warning and a call to action, for governments, business and communities alike.

1.5 Degrees Live! features the reading, in full, of the IPCC Special Report on global warming of 1.5 °C by invited guest speakers including policy-makers, business and industry leaders, artists, scientists, activists and members of the public.

First performed at the 2019 Edinburgh Fringe, the original producers explain that “we wanted to get to grips with the science and the scientific and policy recommendations as ordinary people; we wanted to create a big conversation as a community about what we need to do.”

You don’t have to grapple with it alone – so come and have this important report read to you. Listen to the future of the planet, live and learn how we can all play our part in taking climate action.

Both readers and audience at the Edinburgh event described their participation as life-changing.

Flinders University is proud to join with the City of Adelaide, The Garden of Unearthly Delights, and WOMADelaide to present 1.5 Degrees Live!
