We know the important contribution the arts and culture sector make to the community and the world, so Assemblage Centre for Creative Arts is really pleased to be able to offer an artist in residence opportunity at a time when so many other opportunities for artists are paused. -Dr Tully Barnett
Assemblage Centre for Creative Arts is now calling for applications for our 2021 Artist in Residence program. The program is a great opportunity to work in partnership with creative arts staff and students at Flinders University and to have some dedicated time to work on creative practice. The Artist in Residence program is inviting established, mid-career and emerging national and international practitioners to apply. The program gives an artist access to our dynamic research centre and support from our experienced team. The resident will have access to a vast range of academic fields in areas such as engineering, robotics, artificial intelligence, motion capture, virtual reality and health sciences.
This year the theme for the residence program is transformative and digital technologies. The resident will have access to studio facilities, financial support and academic support. The program features The Void, a studio where the resident can create with motion capture and virtual reality in our digital media lab. The Artist in Residence program will run for eight weeks, and it will be located at Flinders University with a stipend of $10,000. The convergence of arts, science, health, technology, engineering and community is the perfect environment for you to explore and uncover endless possibilities.
Assemblage understands the importance of these types of opportunities and spaces for artists. At Flinders, you will be part of an ecosystem that provides opportunities to develop your work. The Assemblage Centre Deputy Director Dr Tully Barnett said
Since the pandemic, opportunities for the artist in residence programs have been vastly reduced but we know the important contribution the arts and culture sector makes to the community and the world, so Assemblage Centre for Creative Arts is really pleased to be able to offer an artist in residence opportunity.
Dr Barnett mentioned that this opportunity would appeal to artists with some skills and interests in digital technologies. In addition to having access to a Flinders Uni desk space, material resources, and a paid stipend, the residency will include some time each week in The Void with technical staff and researchers. The Artist in Residence will be asked to give a public lecture about their work in progress and their creative process at the end of the residency.
The program has proven to be an exceptional opportunity. An example of this is Kate Power, the first artist to be part of the residence program at Flinders. Her work uses video, performance, sculpture and installation. During her time at Flinders, Power had the opportunity to develop a project titled Mush to Muscle, using sculpture and choreography. The program provided her with the time and inspirational space to develop her creative work.
I’m thrilled to be selected as the first artist-in-residence at the new Creative Arts Centre, Assemblage. The time to deep dive into my new project, while being part of a diverse community, is an incredible opportunity to expand my knowledge and creative approaches’ -Kate Power
Assemblage Centre for Creative Arts invites you to apply to be part of this exciting program. Assemblage and the Residence program will encourage you to experiment across all art forms to develop your creative work. Why wait? Apply now.
