The College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences (HASS) Learning and Teaching Academy is at the forefront of tertiary education. It provides a platform for passionate educators within the College to showcase their educational work and develop their scholarship of learning and teaching.
The Academy is dedicated to promoting excellence and innovation in tertiary education by fostering exchange of ideas, best practice and mentorship. The Academy is a central element in supporting the College’s strategy for student success. It focuses on a range of educational aspects such as:
The HASS Academy offers a range of professional development opportunities including workshops, roundtables and other initiatives in support of a culture of excellence, innovation, creativity and integrity. It also facilitates the development of pedagogical projects initiated by College’s staff.
The HASS Academy works closely with the Flinders Learning and Teaching Academy and with the other Colleges’ academies.
The HASS Learning and Teaching Academy is led by a team of dedicated educators from the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences.

Eric is Professor of French (Teaching Specialist) and the initiator of the HASS Learning and Teaching Academy. He has held a number of academic and administrative positions at Flinders through which he has endeavoured to advance learning and teaching. Until 2022, Eric was Dean (Education) for the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences. Eric has expertise in language learning strategies and currently teaches 3rd year in the French program.
Kate's research area is Life Narrative Studies. Her work is engaged with the ways in which people tell stories about their lives and the lives of others and the literatures and technologies they use to record these life stories.
She is also involved with many committees and groups across the university.
Matt is a playwright, screenwriter, lecturer, director, and co-founder of South Australian Playwrights Theatre. He has spent the last twenty years writing and directing his own plays and films and developing the work of other actors and screenwriters.
Eliza is a lecturer in Tourism and Events, teaching Introduction to Tourism Studies, Interpretation for Tourism and Event Design and Management topics. She has previously worked at Leeds Beckett University, UK teaching event management topics and conducting industry projects with associations such as Meetings Professionals International (MPI).
Dr. Mai Ngo is a Senior Lecturer in TESOL and Applied Linguistics in College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences, Flinders University. Dr. Mai has specialised in TESOL and Applied Linguistics since 1994, teaching relevant topics at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the field of TESOL and Applied Linguistics.
Gerti Szili is a Human Geographer with a background in urban and regional planning, environmentaI studies and anthropology. Her core research interests lie in investigating urban and regional regeneration practice and governance and understanding how communities negotiate landscapes in transition.
Dr Christèle Maizonniaux is a SoTL research scholar who brings a dynamic approach to her work at Flinders University as Senior Lecturer in French. She is a Chercheure Associée at the University Grenoble-Alpes (Lab. Litt.& Arts, CNRS).
She has a particular expertise in contemporary French and francophone Children's literature in Language teaching and Learning and has published widely on this topic.
A Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and practitioner in Visual Effects, Postproduction, Animation, and Film-related courses. Jason has been a Course Leader in Visual Effects and associated subjects for over 2 decades. Before joining Flinders, he spent 2019 working as an Associate Professor in Visual Effects at XJTLU in Suzhou, China, helping to set up a new State of the Art Film School. He is currently an honorary Associate Professor in Visual Effects at the University of Liverpool in the UK.
Werner Botha is Senior Lecturer in the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences at Flinders University, Australia. His research interests include the use of English in Asian higher education, language variation, multilingualism, and sociolinguistics. He is Co-Editor of The Handbook of Asian Englishes, published by Wiley Blackwell, Editorial Board Member of the journals Language Matters and Educational Studies (Taylor and Francis), and Assistant Editor for the Wiley journal World Englishes.
