This symposium brings together international experts in digital health and medical devices to share knowledge and discuss issues and trends.
Participants will come away with greater knowledge about digital health interoperability and medical device safety and security using standards and research conducted through the Digital Health Research Centre and the Medical Device Research Institute here at Flinders Tonsley Campus.
Come and learn, have fun (geeky fun!) and meet the people who are making a difference in the world in healthcare devices and interoperability.
Registration for this two-day symposium includes morning and afternoon tea, and a light lunch.
Participants are also invited to attend the official launch of the Digital Health Design Lab.

Professor Trish Williams is CISCO Chair and Professor in Digital Health Systems at Flinders University in South Australia. Trish is also co-director of the Flinders Digital Health Research Centre. As International Co-Chair of HL7 Security, and the Australian expert on security, software and safety health informatics ISO standards (ISO Technical Committee 215), she builds on over 30 years’ experience in healthcare computing including 15 years industry experience in general practice and pharmacy computing, before joining academia in 2001. Professor Williams has a strong focus on the translation of research into practical application, demonstration of the contribution that digital health technologies can make to support healthcare, and the use of information security as an enabler for improved healthcare communication and interoperability. She is recognised internationally for her digital health information security expertise and experience in digital health information interoperability.
Professor Karen Reynolds is Director of the Medical Device Research Institute (MDRI) and the Medical Device Partnering Program (MDPP) as well as Dean (Research) of the College of Science and Engineering at Flinders University. Bridging the divide between research and industry, Karen is considered one of Australia’s leading researchers in biomedical engineering and has been recognised for her outstanding contributions. She was awarded the 2018 Flinders University Convocation Medal, became an Honorary Fellow of Engineers Australia in 2017, awarded Engineers Australia David Dewhurst award in 2016, South Australian Scientist of the Year 2012, elected Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences (2011), and awarded Australian Professional Engineer of the Year (2010). Karen holds a number of external roles including Member, Australian Medical Research Advisory Board and Director, Academy of Technological Sciences & Engineering Board.
Dr Brendan Lovelock is the Health Practice Lead for Cisco Australia. In this role, Brendan is responsible for developing transformative information technology solutions and services that facilitate the delivery of safe, affordable and accessible healthcare. Much of his work has focused around the processes to benchmark information technology infrastructure in hospitals and its role in enabling clinical and operational outcomes. Dr Lovelock has a particular interest in innovation and systems transformation in hospitals. He Chaired the Digital Hospital Design Community of Practice for the Health Informatics Society of Australia for 8 years and led their annual conferences and colloquia. Dr Lovelock leads an annual international innovation study tour and through this has created round table engagements for Australian CEO’s and CIO’s with counterparts in leading healthcare innovation centres in the US and the UK.
Grahame Grieve is HL7's Product Director for "FHIR" - the leading healthcare data exchange standard of the future. Grahame has a background in laboratory medicine, software vendor development, clinical research, open source development and has conceived, developed and sold interoperability and clinical document solutions and products in the Australian market and around the world. Grahame has worked to develop standards and solutions with several US vendor consortiums, and the national programs of Canada, England, Singapore, and Australia.
Dr Vince McCauley is qualified in Medicine and Computer Science. For his Ph.D in Medicine, he designed and oversaw the construction of the first fully computerised Australian sleep laboratory. He was a member of the small team that developed nasal CPAP as the definitive treatment for Obstructive Sleep Apnoea. He has extensive clinical experience in Respiratory and Emergency Medicine. His eHealth company, McCauley Software, developed innovative solutions for Pathology Laboratories, Radiology and Primary Care with extensive experience in Health Software Architecture, Medicare eClaiming, SQL and laboratory instrument interfacing. He works extensively in eHealth Standards as an Australian delegate to HL7 International and ISO TC215 (eHealth), a member of the Standards Australia peak eHealth committee (IT14) and Chair of IHE Australia and a member of the IHE International Board. He joined Telstra Health in 2015 and is currently the Chief Medical Officer. His areas of work include eHealth Clinical governance and safety, Standards including FHIR, Medication Management, ED systems and pathology. Dr McCauley hopes to see in his lifetime a secure, highly connected, interoperable eHealth infrastructure underpinned by sustainable business models.
Todd Cooper has over 30 years experience in medical device informatics. He was one of the first to embed C++ in medical device firmware (late 80's). He was an architect of the software for one of the world's most successful infusion pump systems and he is responsible for founding and leading many of the device informatics standards, from IEEE, HL7, IHE, ISO, IEC including the IEEE 11073 series and the ISO/IEC 80001 risk management standards. He initiated Devices on FHIR in 2016 and is currently helping to advance the IEEE 11073 Service-oriented Device Connectivity (SDC) global standards providing the Holy Grail of medical device informatics: plug-and-play D2D interoperability for the most challenging medical contexts such as OR, ICU, emergency and trauma care.
Robert Snelick (Computer Science) has been with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) since 1986. Mr. Snelick is the project lead and chief architect for the NIST HL7 v2 Testing Infrastructure. He is the co-chair for the HL7 conformance working group and has led many testing initiatives including those for the Office of the National Coordinator (ONC) Health IT Certification, the Center for Disease and Control (CDC), and the Integrating the Healthcare Enterprises (IHE). Mr. is the co-author of the book “Healthcare Interoperability Standards Compliance Handbook”.
John J. Garguilo is a supervisory computer scientist at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) of the United States Department of Commerce, leading projects related to medical device interoperability. He serves as the Health Level Seven (HL7) Healthcare Device Working Group Co-Chair and over a decade as the test lead as well as six years as the Technical Committee Co-chair for the Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise – Patient Care Device (IHE-PCD) domain. John is also serving the second of an elected two-year term as the Secretary of the IEEE for the 11073 Medical Device Communications Point of Care (PoCD) working group. John’s focus over the past ten years has been on developing conformance test tooling in support of standardization of medical device information exchange and working with device standard and Standards Development Organizations (including HL7 V2 and ISO/IEEE 11073).
The Symposium will be held in Lecture Theatre 2 at Flinders Tonsley Campus, Adelaide South Australia.
On day 1 drinks and nibbles will be served on Level 5 in room 5.29 from 5.30pm to 7:30pm.
