At Allin Towbars, custom towbar fabrication is one of their core strengths, with welding being a vital part of the manufacturing process. However, welding poses significant challenges, requiring highly skilled operators to manage its hazards and demands. Flinders Factory of the Future has been working with Allin Towbars for a project "Evaluation of Tow Bar Fabrication Processes for Cobot Welding Integration," aimed at exploring how cobot welding systems can enhance their operations.
A thorough review of the existing fabrication processes has been conducted, examining key production parameters such as time efficiency, quality, complexity, environmental impact, batch sizes, materials, welding types, and the feasibility of nesting and jigging.
The project resulted in:
This project not only aligned with the customer’s commitment to lean manufacturing principles but also showcases their dedication to innovation and continuous improvement with advanced technologies.
“
It is very impressive to see the cobot welding system in action with our product. I am particularly surprised by its ability to weld our product without needing to rotate the part, which significantly enhances efficiency. We're excited to continue our partnership with Flinders University’s Factory of the Future and look forward to further collaboration.
”
Colbotic Automation, a South Australian company, has developed an advanced cobot welding system tailored for businesses engaged in small to medium-batch production. This system simplifies robotic programming, making it accessible for both beginners and experts, significantly enhancing welding efficiency.
This state-of-the-art system has been tested and trialled by the FFF team and will play a crucial role in supporting South Australian SMEs, particularly in enhancing their manufacturing capabilities.
The project resulted in:
This new capability at Flinders Factory of the Future not only strengthens industrial research partnerships with Australian SMEs but also showcases the ongoing support for home-grown technology innovators.
“
"Partnering with the Flinders Factory of the Future team has given us a valuable opportunity to showcase our cobot welding technology to a broader audience. Their insightful feedback has been instrumental in refining both our product and processes, which are critical to driving the growth of our business.
