The passage of time demands buildings take on new purposes, and history shows these purposes can be fascinating. One Flinders researcher seeks to exhibit the several roles that Australia’s oldest surviving theatre building, the Queen's Theatre, has embodied over time.
Hear from stage director and dramaturg Dr Christopher Hurrell who is directing Five trials on the Queen’s Stage. Chris hopes to bring to life the history and truth of the 180-year-old heritage-listed Queens Theatre through an immersive virtual reality performance.
Christopher is a stage director and dramaturg whose work is involved with the areas of Shakespeare, musical theatre, and new writing. Chris has worked nationally and internationally, collaborating with leading Australian playwrights to create award-winning works of theatre.
His work at Sydney’s Griffin Theatre company on a performance called Myth, Propaganda and Disaster in Nazi Germany and Contemporary America broke the company’s box office records. Chris completed his PhD at Goldsmith, University of London, and after graduating he continued to champion Australian theatre on the world stage. With Wayne Harrison AM, Chris brought Alan Seymour’s classic Australian The One Day of the Year back to the London stage for the centenary of the Gallipoli campaign in 2015. In 2017, he directed the West End premiere presentation of Adelaide singer-songwriter Amity Dry’s The (M)other Life. The work continues in development and is slated for an Australian tour in 2022.
