Flinders University is addressing the health work force gap in rural and remote areas, by offering aspiring rural medical professionals the opportunity to study the four-year Flinders MD course in a rural location as part of the SA Rural Medical (SARM) Program.
The Postgraduate SA Rural Medical Program aims to develop the elements of knowledge, understanding and skill central to varied areas of medical practice, producing graduates well prepared to act as hospital interns and with the potential to follow a full range of medical specialties in subsequent training.
By studying and staying rurally, you will appreciate the many opportunities a rural lifestyle has to offer, while developing an understanding of the health needs of rural communities as a clinician.
Students will live and study years 1 and 2 of the MD in the Riverland or Mount Gambier in the Greater Green Triangle. Later, in years 3 and 4, students will study in either the Hills Mallee Fleurieu, the Barossa Valley, the Riverland or Greater Green Triangle region.
With up to 46 places available, the SA Rural Medical (SARM) Program is a gateway to a fulfilling rural medical career.

Flinders University is a leader in providing medical education and established the first South Australian Rural Clinical School in Renmark in 1997. The SARM Program is the first end to end rural medical program in South Australia. That means, it is the first medical program that students can study their entire degree outside of metropolitan Adelaide.
It is unique because Flinders is the only SA university that offers a program that will have as many students studying outside of metropolitan Adelaide, at the same time as students studying in metropolitan SA. The Northern Territory Medical Program (NTMP), which has been underway since 2011 has informed the development of the SARM Program. Students will learn with a cohort of students in their local region, across rural SA, and across five regions of the Northern Territory. It is the only medical program taught across the entire Australian Central Corridor.
