The Rural Junior Doctor program offers accredited Intern and Postgraduate Year Two (PGY2) programs at Mount Gambier hospital.
The Mount Gambier and Districts Health Service offers a full year of internship in a rural environment with full support from the Medical Board of South Australia and the SAMET.
It is supported by Flinders Rural Health SA through funding from Country Health SA.
All interns and PGY2 appointees work under supervision as part of a clinical team with the specialist term supervisor and salaried medical officers. Staff provide a nurturing learning environment for all junior doctors.
Interns will have five 10 – 11 week term rotations including core terms of Emergency Medicine, General Medicine & General Surgery.
Additional term rotations are available in GP Clinics and Anaesthetics.
PGY2 appointees will have a full year, which can include rotations to Emergency Medicine, General Medicine, General Surgery, Paediatrics, GP Obstetrics and GP Anaesthetics.
Journal club is held regularly, involving a integrated small group learning environment. A diverse program has been devised discussing recent journal articles and clinical case presentations, family medicine program articles, clinical reviews and audits. TMOs will have the opportunity to present at journal club.
Grand rounds and workshops are held regularly with visiting specialists presenting up to date clinical information to participants.
Skills laboratory sessions include acute skills training and access to state-of-the-art simulation equipment.
Teaching rounds are undertaken by consultants vertically integrated with medical students, junior doctors and registrars.
24-hour access to RHSA internet and lounge facilities.
The Mount Gambier hospital is the major regional health provider for the lower, mid and upper south-east regions with a catchment area that extends across the border into western Victoria. The hospital provides a rich and varied environment in which you can develop your skills.
After a major redevelopment in 2014, the hospital's modern facilities include 78 public beds, 4 operating theatres, an emergency department, a 27-bed surgical unit and a 20-bed maternity unit. Also co–located on the hospital site is a wide range of support and allied health professional services, catering to regional healthcare needs.
Flinders University Rural and Remote Health SA has a large presence in our State's regional areas, including Barossa Valley, Hills Mallee Fleurieu and Kangaroo Island, Mid North and Yorke Peninsula, Riverland, South East and Far North and Eyre Peninsula.
