The Basil Taliangis Bursary was established following a donation by Mr Basil Taliangis AM. The bursaries encourage financially disadvantaged students, attending secondary schools in the Adelaide metropolitan area or outer suburbs, to undertake a higher education course.
Chaitra Barot was awarded a bursary in 2014 after she was accepted into a Bachelor of Medical Science. Chaitra is hoping to pursue a career in medicine and she chose her current course because the same core topics are studied in the first two years.
Chaitra says she wanted to study at Flinders because, “Flinders is known to be the best university for Medical students in South Australia. Therefore, it was my parents and my dream that I study in a university that would provide me with higher level of understanding in all the aspects.”
On receiving the bursary, Chaitra says, “I felt blessed and grateful.” Without the financial assistance she received, Chaitra would have struggled to afford her university fees, “I come from a middle class family with some financial difficulties. In addition, I had to pay my fees until I become an Australian Citizen – which occurred in June 2015.”
Chaitra is grateful for the bursary she received and would like to thank donors who support the Flinders University scholarship program,
“The help that they provide for the students is really appreciated. This encourages students to do well in their academics as well as to study their preferred course.”
