Professor Michael Kidd AM Scholarship
Amy is part of the Gringai Clan of the Wonnara Nations in New South Wales. Raised in Adelaide, she is the second eldest of seven children and the first in her family to go to university.
With a strong interest in the continuity of care that a doctor can provide to patients and their family, Amy applied to study medicine at Flinders University.
However, she found it difficult to meet the costs associated with studying and in 2019 she received the Professor Michael Kidd AM Scholarship. The scholarship for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students encourages the retention and success of those studying a health profession at Flinders.
‘The scholarship helps me to feel supported and gives me motivation to keep pushing through hard times,’ says Amy. ‘It means that I can access study resources I would not have been able to otherwise. For example, a lot of resources are online now and cost a monthly fee of up to $70.’
The support is also building Amy’s confidence in her abilities and creating further opportunities for her education and her future.
‘Confidence is important to me because my future patients will expect me to be knowledgeable and confident in applying my medical knowledge.’
By undertaking additional units in the Master of Clinical Education through the degree, Amy is opening her future opportunities to become involved in teaching and medicine simultaneously.
Amy is grateful for the scholarship and says, ‘Thank you for the generous support. It is very much appreciated and will go a long way to helping me progress through my degree.’
Education has the ability to change lives and lay the foundation for success. Reducing financial barriers to higher education for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students is crucial for increasing participation and future success.
Donate to the Professor Michael Kidd AM Scholarship today and support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to become health professionals.
