Matthew Flinders Scholarship
Anh Vuong is cultivating a critical mindset to better design medical systems and products that improve our quality of life.
From a small town in Vietnam, Anh moved to Ho Chi Minh City to study a Bachelor of Biomedical Engineering when he was 18.
“I was interested in electrical things and how they worked, but also fascinated by human physiology,” says Anh. “It's been great to combine the two through biomedical engineering.”
After three years in the local industry, Anh wanted to challenge his thinking and expand his mind on what is possible in medical design, so made the exciting move to study a Master of Engineering (Biomedical) at Flinders University.
“I believed I could foster a critical mindset, such as problem solving and thinking independently, by exposing myself to a more professional education in Australia, which is so innovative in the biomedical field.”
With Flinders’ biomedical and materials engineering research ranked above world standard, Anh came to the right place to be challenged.
“I want to express my sincere gratitude to the donors for their help,” says Anh.
But expanding his mindset was not the only challenge Anh has faced during his Masters.
“I’m now in the final months of completing my thesis, which is really stressful, and I don’t have time for part-time work to support my living costs,” says Anh. “My budget for food, bills and rent is very tight – I buy only the essential food.”
Under high pressure to complete his Masters and cover his living costs, Anh received a Matthew Flinders Scholarship.
“The scholarship arrived just when I needed it most – it will cover my food costs for the final three months of my studies and allow me to focus on completing my degree.”
Anh extends his heartfelt appreciation to the scholarship donors, acknowledging their important role in his academic journey. Their generosity not only eases his immediate financial pressures, but will also enable him to effect positive change in his homeland.
“I hope that by exposing myself to the professionalism and high standard of the Australian biomedical field, it will help me to build and improve the standards in Vietnam.”
