James Atkinson has been the Principal, Flinders Living since October 2015. He is one of the longest serving heads of Australian university colleges and halls. He has held appointments as Head, Bellenden Ker College & Manager, Residential Life (Griffith University) and Head, Campus East (University of Wollongong). In addition James has also served in management roles in a number of faculty, central and executive offices at Griffith University and the Office of the Premier of Queensland.

James currently serves as the SA Representative on the National Committee of University Colleges Australia.

Qualifications

Bachelor of Arts (Economic Theory & Political Science), The University of Queensland.

Master of Public Administration, The University of Queensland.

Master of Arts in College Student Personnel (Higher Education & Student Affairs), Bowling Green State University, USA.

Graduate Certificate in Management, University of Southern Queensland.

Key responsibilities

As Principal, Flinders Living:

  • Strategic leadership to, and management of, Flinders Living which incorporates University Hall and Deirdre Jordan Village.
  • Coordinate the academic and pastoral care of all members of the Flinders Living community overseeing student welfare, academic progression, community development and maintenance of appropriate residential community standards.
  • On-going development of programmes and support systems to ensure that all residents have the opportunity to engage with the Flinders Living community and enjoy the best possible University experience.
