As a clinician academic, my broad areas of interest include ophthalmology, vision sciences, eye health research and university teaching and supervision. The primary outcomes of my research interests are to prevent blinding eye diseases that are common in Australia among vulnerable populations. Passionate about addressing the existing eye health inequities among Indigenous Australians, rural populations and those suffering from disadvantages. I am also interested in initiating and reporting on epidemiological eye health studies in low-to-middle-income countries and other under-resourced regions or socioeconomically deprived populations.
The current research portfolio includes understanding the epidemiology, sociodemographic, biological, genetic and epigenetic aspects of blinding eye diseases relevant to Indigenous Australians and, ultimately, how we can find better ways to screen and prevent blindness. My areas of research expertise embrace vision-related functional outcomes and biological and socioeconomic markers of diabetic retinopathy through large-scale population-based eye studies that include comprehensively phenotyped cohorts and advanced imaging techniques. Other areas of research expertise include cataract morphology, glaucoma assessments in optometry practice, and contrast sensitivity and visual function testing.
