Associate Professor
College of Science and Engineering
Dr Sergiy Shelyag completed his PhD studies in Germany (University of Göttingen) in 2004. Before taking associate professorship in applied mathematics at Flinders University, he was a senior lecturer in data science at Deakin University and a senior lecturer in applied mathematics at the University of Northumbria (UK). He also held numerous postdoctoral positions at Queen's University, Belfast (UK) and the University of Sheffield (UK). Dr Shelyag has broad research interests in computational and applied mathematics, computational fluid dynamics and astrophysical magneto-hydrodynamics, machine learning, neuroscience, applications of mathematical, computational and machine learning methods in health, sport science and defence. He is a fellow of Australian Mathematical Society (AustMS) and Fellow of Higher Education Academy (FHEA). His collaborative links include Defence Science and Technology Group (Australia), Pennsilvania State University (US), Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research (Germany), IAC (Spain), among others.
2001-2004, PhD in Physics and Astronomy (Georg-August University, Göttingen, Germany)
2019-2020, GCert in Higher Education, Learning and Teaching (Deakin University, Australia)
1999-2000, MSc (specialist) diploma (Department of Radio Physics, Kharkiv National University, Ukraine)
1995-1999, BSc diploma (Department of Radio Physics, Kharkiv National University, Ukraine)
My aim is to increase visibility of mathematical research at Flinders University. I am a member of Australian Mathematical Society (AustMS) and of Complex System Society (CCS). I represent Flinders University as a member of Australian Council of Heads of Mathematical Sciences. Over the last years, I have organised several MATRIX Institute workshop on mathematics of physiological rhythms, neuroscience, delay-differential equations, a special session on delay-differential equations at NZMS-AustMS-AMS joint meeting, a session on AOGS-2025 to be held in Singapore in 2025. I act as a grant reviewer for ARC, STFC (UK) and EPSRC (UK), and acted as a panel member for NASA NSPIRES program.
Since September 2024, I am a member (representative of Flinders University) of SACE / NTCET Conversion Review Committee.
