This PhD project is part of a larger Australia Research Council DECRA Fellowship project ‘Contesting Conquests: Pre-Modern Attempts to Come to Terms with the Past’, led by Dr Matthew Firth.
This scholarship is for a candidate wishing to pursue a PhD in history, with a relevant undergraduate or masters degree in history or a cognate discipline.
The larger project looks at how societies experience and remember the trauma of conquest and colonisation, taking an especial interest in England’s early medieval histories of invasion (pre-1066) and how these were received and transmitted in the historiography of the later Middle Ages and early modern period.

Prior to submitting applying for HDR admission, prospective applicants are advised to contact the project lead, Matthew Firth via email (matthew.firth@flinders.edu.au) to discuss your interest and eligibility in the scholarship opportunity. The project lead may invite you to apply and request a copy of your CV; a cover letter outlining your relevant qualifications, research experience, and reasons for applying for the scholarship; and an example of previous research.
By lodging an application for HDR admission, applicants acknowledge:

The applicant confirms in the application for PhD admission that, if they are not successful in being awarded the scholarship, their supervisors agree that the project and enrolment can still proceed and the applicant agrees to this.
All other applications for PhD admission lodged in line with this scholarship opportunity will be not be assessed and will be withdrawn.
