We are seeking an outstanding candidate for a PhD scholarship to undertake a program of research within a broader NHMRC Ideas Grant entitled: Developing and applying a world-first alcohol market monitoring system. This exciting project is a partnership between The George Institute for Global Health, the National Centre for Education and Training on Addiction (NCETA) at Flinders University, the Canadian Institute for Substance Use Research (CISUR; University of Victoria, Canada), the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and the Melbourne Law School (The University of Melbourne).
The overall project aims to develop a world-first comprehensive alcohol market monitoring, analysis and reporting system capturing product data and on-pack promotion. Within this project, the PhD student will explore the trade-offs drinkers make between different alcohol product attributes (e.g. a ‘low sugar’ claim, % alcohol by volume, health warning labels) when making alcohol purchase and consumption decisions, and model the implications of these trade-offs for the potential health impacts of alternative regulatory options for alcohol product labelling.
This PhD scholarship will be based at NCETA, Flinders University, Adelaide (Principal supervisor Prof Jacqueline Bowden). Associate supervision will be provided by national alcohol policy research experts (Prof Simone Pettigrew, The George Institute; Dr Ashlea Bartram, NCETA).
