The Overseas Travelling Fellowship is the most prestigious award offered by the University to higher degree research students.
No more than two Travelling Fellowships will be awarded in any one year.
The Overseas Travelling Fellowship has been established to enable full-time or part-time PhD students who have demonstrated outstanding aptitude for independent research, to undertake short periods of further study or further research in approved universities or other institutions outside Australia, provided a clear advantage to the thesis and to the University is to be gained from the student's experience.
The recipient of the Travelling Fellowship is expected to be an exemplary ambassador for the University.
The value of the fellowship will be an economy class return-trip airfare with student concession plus taxes and travel insurance (which can be arranged through the University).
The University Scholarships Committee may grant in addition the, the BankSA Travelling Award $625.00.
No more than two Travelling Fellowships will be awarded in any one year.
Candidates for the Travelling Fellowship must:
• have been enrolled in the University for a PhD degree for at least 18 months at the time of departure (or an equivalent period part-time);
• have clearly demonstrated during this period an outstanding aptitude for independent research; and have gained unqualified support from his/ her supervisor for the proposed overseas visit;
• have gained approval from the overseas institution that he/she is acceptable for the proposed period of study;
The Travelling Fellowship will be awarded by the Higher Degree by research Scholarships Committee which shall take into account the merit of both the applicant and the application, and the financial resources available to the applicant.
A fellowship shall not be awarded where attendance at a conference or collection of primary data is the principal purpose of travel. A short list of applicants may be interviewed by the Scholarships Committee. The maximum period of tenure for the fellowship shall be six months. No application for extension will be granted unless there are exceptional circumstances.
Applications should be submitted online through the Flinders University Student System by the specified closing date. Please ensure all of your personal details are up-to-date in the Student System as you will be assessed using this information.
Applications must include a curriculum vitae, and indicate the arrangements for supervision during the applicant's absence. Applications shall indicate, with supporting statements from the candidate's supervisor(s), Head of the academic organisational unit or independent referee, that the candidate: (a) has shown outstanding aptitude for independent research; and (b) has clearly demonstrated that overseas travel would add significantly to his/her research; and (c) has prepared a detailed account of the research or study to be undertaken at the proposed overseas institution; and (d) has given a written undertaking to return to the University to complete his/her research immediately following the completion of the study abroad.
