Description

Join an exciting new research program led by Dr. Feargal Ryan at Flinders University. Dr Ryan’s research focuses on integrating different types of biological data to understand the mechanisms of disease, identify biomarkers and explore potential therapeutics across a variety of areas, including cancer, the gut microbiome, infectious diseases, long COVID, and more.

We welcome candidates from diverse fields—including biology, computer science, or physics. Familiarity with basics of genetics, bioinformatics, DNA/RNA sequencing and tools like R, Python, or Bash is helpful, but strong problem-solving skills and a curiosity to learn are most important. The ideal candidate will be well-organised, a good communicator, and enthusiastic about working across disciplines. Whether you have experience in data science, lab-based research, or technical fields, this is a great opportunity to build new skills and contribute to cutting-edge health research.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the award of this scholarship a student must:

Be an Australian citizen; or New Zealand citizen; or have been granted permanent resident status; and
Meet PhD admission requirements including: have an Australian Honours degree Class 1 or 2A or equivalent qualification (at least AQF Level 8), including a research component of at least 6 months’ full-time study achieving Distinction (75%) OR including evidence of equivalent research experience, such as a substantial first-author refereed publication or track record as an investigator on a competitive grant; and be available to commence as a full-time PhD student at Flinders University in semester 2, 2025.

The ‘Supervisor confirmation’ must refer to the application for this scholarship
The application for PhD admission will only be assessed where:
- The applicant is successful in being awarded the scholarship, OR
- The applicant confirms in the application for PhD admission that, if they are not successful in being awarded the scholarship, their supervisors agree that the project and enrolment can still proceed and the applicant agrees to this.

All other applications for PhD admission lodged in line with this scholarship opportunity will not be assessed and will be withdrawn.
