Thank you to everyone who submitted photos for our Flinders Flashback competition.
After a call to send in your memories of when you were studying on campus, we received an amazing array of photos of sporting teams, nature, graduation, campus views and of course ducks. 🦆
The entry with the most votes won a Nikon D5600 DSLR Camera with 18-55mm and 70-300mm Lens Kit.
“This photo shows one of the most glorious moments in my life. My peers and I were waiting to be called to receive our graduation certificate on podium. At the ceremony, my parents were behind me witnessing and giving me the greatest applause.”
April: Bill (BA’80)
In 1979 Bill raced The Pink Bat in Flinders Independence Day celebrations.
May: Louise (Bsc(Hons) ’91)
In 1990 Louise poses with Stanley the Sthenurus before her graduation.
June: Sijie (Skeat) (MBus(IntBus) '18)
In 2017 Skeat reflects the main entrance of the Bedford Park campus.
1970s flashback to my ITAL3214-Italian Cinema class in Social Sciences North.
Donna on the library steps.
Me at Flinders University Hall, getting ready for a hippy-themed dress-up party at the Tonsley Tavern. 28 April 2011. Groovy man. 😀
Flinders Baseball was the first to host an Intervarsity and was possibly the most successful club in the "early" days.

I captured this image in Social Sciences South in July of my second year in 2018. I shot it walking between study hideouts and it’s certainly a favourite. The composition, with the incredibly striking sky and empty courtyard looks almost ethereal.
This is just a normal graduation photo, but for me it meant so much more. Flinders gave me the opportunity to get my Master of Education (Studies of Asia) while living in Melbourne.Classes were in Melbourne, and the Flinders interstate support was phenomenal! I felt so grateful on this day.
Winning the gold medal at the Australian University Championships for Baseball in Melbourne (Flinders went through undefeated), great memories of an amazing week. We had sent teams to these championships all through the 1990s.
Flinders University Winter Baseball B Grade Premiers1979. A truly motley crew.
1979 Independence Day at Flinders University - Soap Box Derby racing The Pink Bat.
This is a photo of Tony Chin enjoying the Flinders/Monash exchange in 1994. The baseball and football clubs worked as a team to host a baseball and softball tournament, which included 3 social events and 10 games. A wonderful example of what Flinders students can achieve when they work collaboratively.
Seeing signs learning of snakes on campus, playing ultimate frisbee on the oval and running up and down stairs having fun. Winning the O Week quiz was a highlight 😁.
In 1969, during the Maoist Cultural Revolution, the editors of The Empire Times ran a story about radical students from Flinders trying to liberate farmers on Kangaroo Island.
The supporting shot, staged on the university oval has Paul Szuster and Valmai Williams as victorious defenders. Questionable about the radicals' behaviour.
Fun times during the fundraising of Engineers Without Borders pie throwing competition. We were raising money for our society to refurbish old PCs for refugees and school workshops in Cambodia
Our sense of independence was celebrated every year on 4th July with Independence Day - not the American version, but the date of formal independence of Flinders from the University of Adelaide - the date when we were no longer the University of Adelaide at Bedford Park, but became Flinders. The breakfast was followed by other events, including performances in the Matthew Flinders Theatre, billy cart races down the hill, boat races involving skulling, a celebratory drink to the Flinders statue in North Terrace and other highlights.
From the early days, this is of me performing in a university revue sketch, which was always a lot of fun. In those days, the Matthew Flinders Theatre was actively used for lunchtime concerts and shows put on by students, including an early Robyn Archer amongst others.
This photo showed my changing life statuses. The picture on the wall was taken during In the Frame exhibition while I was so lost and uncertain. After that program, I found my way for the future so that I held the university journal with my eyes pictured on the cover confidently.
It was summer in December 2015. Few days after our graduation. We took this picture at the new plaza. It was one of the happiest days of our journey in Flinders as Australia Awards Scholarship Awardees.
A day before Graduation

Celebrating graduation!!
Many happy memories trundling between the bus, Library and Biological Sciences buildings, and lunch with friends in the plaza during 1989.
Flinders grounds looking fabulous. Photo taken during my last days as a third year student in 1989. I returned to visit 30 years later in December 2019. Some things have changed, but most remain the same. Such a fantastic place.
1990 - posing with Stanley the Sthenurus in biology palaeo lab before my Honours graduation. The lab tech had pioneered a technique to realistically replicate fossil bones. Stanley was destined for display at Naracoorte Caves.
1990 - me in basement biology lab during my Honours year. I still use skills I developed back then. It was a fantastic lab environment and set me up for later success in my chosen field as a park ranger.
Library 1989. My spot - third floor via stairs, 18 desks from the back, plaza side window seat. Free paper from old dot matrix printers when listings expired. Receiving notifications the old fashioned way via a card in your pigeon hole when the item you were after was available.
Feel like I haven't ‘graduated’ from Flinders as I have been always learning, growing and contributing as a student and as a staff member. Flinders is definitely my second home in the world, where I feel safe, welcomed to stay.
Found this beautiful rainbow sparkling on our campus lake in 2014. That’s the closest I’ve ever been to a rainbow.
In 2014 I was having my lunch alone and this birdy joined me. I happily shared my meal with her and found her surprisingly friendly.
My first day of classes. I had a lecture in STH3 at the top of the hill and I remember having another class soon after. I refused to march up that hill again so I sat and took photos of my gorgeous campus... mostly to make my Adelaide-Uni friends jealous.
My third and final Open Day in 2019. I spent most of it out in the amphitheatre, trawling the stalls and overall having a good time!
This photo is a little blurry, but I took it on an older camera back in 2017, at around dusk. It was a chilly night, but the sky was mostly clear, so I decided to take a quick snapshot of it before I ran for my bus!
I had classes in STH Lecture Theatre 2 so I ended up sprawling on the lawn in front of the steps up to Physical Sciences to catch a little warmth before class. Sunny days at Flinders are always the best.
Sunsets at flinders at the base of the Hub always draw attention and there's nothing prettier than standing on that hill overlooking Car Park 1 and seeing the ocean from where you're standing all the way down at Brighton.

Flinders University has taught me to always inspire and do the best for the world by starting with myself. No matter how small your inspiration and efforts, that's the beginning to achieve great success.
Social area is always my favourite spot. At the same time, I got to eat, listen to music, read journals, talk with friends to eventually finish and submit my assignments.
When the spring came the white cherry tree blossomed at Social Science South. It was my last spring in Adelaide, my final year of PhD candidature.
April 2015 graduation ceremony was filled with pride, joy and relief. Yes! Awarded with a PhD in Mathematics is awesome. I am Dr Wuryatmo Akhmad Sidik - currently a senior lecturer at Jenderal Soedirman University, Indonesia.

Although my graduation ceremony was held in the City, I wanted to take some photos in the place where I earned my degree.
My Flinders moment. After my class relaxing at my favourite spot with the breathtaking beauty of nature. Where the sky, the horizon, the trees and the University campus magnificently blend in a hypnotizing bliss that calms my mind and soothes my spirit. My source of renewed energy and zest.
We were very eager medical science students, enjoying Toly Vietnamese rolls on the daily, and of course celebrating Flinders 49th birthday.
In the winter of 2016, whilst on my way home, I took this photo of the Union Building from the ground. Even in such a gloomy day, the campus and its buildings were still stunning. The view from the rooftop is even better during spring and summer! I miss it!
I was very grateful for being a part of Flinders new faces in 2014. You cannot imagine my feelings when I first saw my face on the city bus running through the main campus!!!
At the moment I took this picture I was thinking about my future. It was the end of a short studying period within my life at Flinders Uni, but also a great new start to my life.
All of my classmates and schoolmates are so excited at this moment, waiting to receive our graduation rewards and share the happiness with family members and close friends.
Flinders Uni provided so many possibilities to me, like sky, free to fly.
Studying business at Victoria Square Campus is super easy and convenient, fantastic location for job interviews as well.
Space of creation allow us fly in the campus.
I got lost and ended up at the Museum of Art. I was having a bad day but I think that’s exactly the reason why I was meant to be there. Beautiful exhibit, peaceful place and wonderful staff (we talked about life!). I left the place with a happy heart!
I always find comfort in the nature reserve within the campus... sunsets at the back of the old Uni Hall and the duck families at the lake. My inspiration for doing up my 3000-word essays was at the 3rd level of the Central library overlooking the horizon…
This photo was taken near the bridge of Bedford Park Campus in May 2018. This reminds me of flocks of white cockatoos that sit on pine trees during autumn. I used to bring my camera to capture the birds then document them on my laptop.
Place to relax after classes😊
Although I studied my whole course in Tonsley campus, every visit of main campus made a great impression on my memory.

I met some of my best friends at Flinders, we had some really long days in the biology and biotechnology labs.
On this day I was presenting my thesis and that was the day last days of my Uni life. It was an incredible experience of my life, which teaches me a lot of life experiences.
During my Master of Language Studies Degree thesis investigation of the creator of Tintin, I undertook research at the Tintin Museum, and the International Comic Art Museum in Brussels, Belgium.
This photo was taken in April of 2003 at one of the many lunches enjoyed by the Plaza. Flinders Uni also happens to be where I met my husband (Zach Houston,
the guy next to me). We make an effort to visit campus whenever we're back in Adelaide.
My favourite Flinders memory would have to be enjoying the serenity from the top of the hill or visiting the lake and ducks while catching up on work :) Here are some photos I took on my camera at my favourite study spot!

My 2 years at Flinders were the best time I ever had. Coming from a society where everyone has a say in everything you do, I made some of the best decisions about my life whilst studying there. My favourite spot is under the trees by the lake.
Those were the days my friend, we thought they’d never end... clubs day O Week 1989. Signing up new recruits for Flinders Uni Hockey Club.
Me and my friends got the great opportunity to actually visit France together, all while remaining on campus. It's similar to how this photo was taken that everyone has been "going" to uni this semester.
Seeing these lights sparkle at night always makes me smile and reminds how beautiful my campus is.
The best place to watch sunset and celebrate my graduation at the same time.
I distinctly remember carefully lining up the phone camera to the microscope eye piece to take cool photos of what we could see
A cold and somber morning on my first day on campus, unsure of what was to come within the three years that followed.
This is the lab team photo taken in Anchor Court during the first year of my PhD (2005). Supervised by Professor Cathy Abbott in School of Biology. I'm the one with little hair on the left.
Living at University Hall in 2006 allowed many 'hallies' residents to venture to main campus late at night to kick a soccer ball on the grassed plaza area and play music. It was here I made friends for life.
This photo was taken in 2016 when I was in my last semester at the campus. I still cherish the time I spent in there.
In 1975 I was enrolled in a BA at Flinders and also playing drums in a band called The Lone Rangers. The photo shows us performing on the plaza in the summer of that year. Some how we managed to drag an upright piano out there! Photo credit: Michael Picton
Second year at a business networking function discussing pathways, opportunities and hearing stories from alumni about their choices and valuable experiences that were highly relevant post study. I had come straight from work to the function and recall its relevance and the fun we had.
I was getting some fresh air near the lake, in between classes, when one of the ducks waddled right up to me. No fear whatsoever!
Men's Basketball Intervarsity team 1968 -grand finalists.
In college, I was offered several scholarships to do a double degree/exchange but I had set my eyes only on Flinders University. Finally, when I was granted a double degree scholarship, I was lucky to enjoy the peaceful and inspiring atmosphere of Flinders.

The last few days at Flinders Uni just before graduation was so memorable. A Flinders Uni Staff took a picture of me saying, 'we're using it for Flinders web as an alumni showcase’... proud being a Uni masters and PhD graduate.
This was taken when I was studying on level 3 in the library during the renovations in 2015. I just wanted to capture the moment when everything was changing. I would study on level 3 regularly it was nice to watch the construction progress.
Flinders uni hall toga party 2006.
These photos are the memories I cannot let disappear from my memories of Flinders. Walking from my house at Francis Road to education building. I love the colour of the trees and the breeze I feel while walking around the campus.

Taken on my first Lecture of GEOG topic- Population dynamics. Miss the days at Uni.

Arriving alone in Australia after a long haul 30 hour plus flight and in the same day making lifelong friends at Flinders University. The lifelong friends have now taken the trip the opposite way to Norway with the next generation of Aussies and Norwegians becoming friends.
Throwback time to Autumn 2005. Beautiful sunset view from Flinders University.
Taken during my lecture and tutorial breaks. Such a beautiful time with amazing memories and a very relaxing environment. I loved it and miss uni now.

'The dance that popped' 2016. Rehearsing in studios late into the evenings was always a highlight. This was a hip hop routine for our graduation show, LOVE AND INFORMATION by Caryl Churchill - the one where I dislocated my patella, tore some ligaments, and came bouncing back twelve months later!
Koala on my study break at Law and Commerce. Smarter than your average bear!
At Flinders I felt the comfortable living in a multicultural society. Learning various cultures from around the world and immersing in the local culture.
1973-76 Flinders campus thrived on protest. It regularly spilled down the hill and oozed into King William Street. This shot of the 35mm neg proofs I took in both locations deliberately reflects the turbulence and passion of Flinders students and campus life, which deeply shaped my subsequent work.
"I made it" This was my first look into the place I would spend the next two amazing years of my life. I could stand here and look at this view forever!
It was a wonderful chance to study at Flinders University in the years 2015-2017. I miss my campus, lovely park and the little lake near the education building.
This photo was taken between Flinders university interchange and the car park of Bedford Park Campus on 24 June 2018. This photo reminds me every beautiful occasion I walked from my unit to campus through the bridge where I enjoyed the music of the nature from the birds.
During my first days of uni in 2013, walking out of the Hub and seeing sights like this was one of my favourite things. Instant recovery from a day of study.
Fun times at the Uni Tavern 1991. Look at the beautiful view! I wish I had a photo of my philosophy lectures by the Lake. Such a lovely campus.

A small get together with fellow students as we waited for an exam.
Graduation barbeque with Dr Gerry Pye just outside her faculty office.
Graduation day, 18 December 2008 with a Srilankan sister and two ladies from Indonesia
I love the cultural diversity that is embraced at Flinders University.
On the first Independence Day 1966 we walked/rode from Flinders to Adelaide Uni to declare our independence. Richard Challis (I think that's correct) was Matthew Flinders with his partner (in the front) and Ryszard Pusz was George Bass (behind).
Behind the boat were various crew members.
I always remember the route which took me to my classroom at Education building, Bedford Park Campus. I enjoyed seeing the big lake and the ducks. Of course, I was happy to meet the international students representing the diverse background and countries, including the different hair colours.
While digitising my slides from the 1970s, I found two slides of the Flinders Uni Hockey Club squad in the Renmark Hotel beer garden. It brought back memories of hockey matches, in particular winning The Cinders at the 1974 Summer I/V, post-match drinking and singing.
Me and Matty on graduation day, 1995.
This photo reminds me the very first days at University when I was in IAP in 2017. The presentation of Jane and Jack (sorry) provided us with information about Aussie cultures in unique ways. Badly miss these moments and hope to come back there very soon.
Participants enjoying an Indian traditional dance 'Dandiya Raas' organized by Flinders University Indian Association (FUIA) in November 2012. This unique multicultural event was a big success, attracting participants from several nationalities including students and staff at Flinders University, as well as other SA Universities and community members. I was then president of FUIA.
Jill and I were married in the chapel at Flinders University by Andrew Patterson on 5 May 1973. Our Reception was held in The Refectory. The guests were on three long tables: Jill's relatives, my relatives and the raucous FUFC between. Check out the backdrop.
This was taken on a warm March night in 2011 after my friend Julius suggested we take a break from working on our Honours projects. He had recently gotten me interested in photography so we took a walk with our cameras. Still my favourite photo of Flinders.
Ground with University Hall and other buildings in the back in 1974 when international students are playing football (soccer). The Medical School building is under construction.
Football (soccer) played by international students in 1974. Players include Mamoru Mohri (PhD, DUniv(Hon), the first Japanese Astronaut), President of Miraikan, Shahed Khan (PhD, Professor at Duquesne University), and Kohei Uosaki (PhD, DSc(Hon), Emeritus Professor Hokkaido Univ, NIMS Fellow). In addition, Sukhvinder Badwal (PhD, CSIRO Hon Fellow) is in the group photo.
Glenelg in May 1974 - life savers contest.
Glenelg May 1976 - Birdman contest.
Nurse Flat in 1974 - we are the first occupant of F-7 - and 2013, not nurse flat anymore. Gum trees grew very much.
This is the ultimate throwback, to an event without which I wouldn't exist - my parents' marriage by the lake in 1973.
Our lovely ducks - we cannot stop loving them - 2014.
Van Gough can't compare - a highlight of first year Histology. The intricacies of the human gut lining looked like a complex piece of art in the space of micrometers. It motivated my passion for medical science and studying the human body.
"What you looking at huh??" Flinders professors may judge students work but the Flinders ducks judge harder. These looks suggest that Flinders University is a just an elaborate diversion from a secret duck organisation. That being said, I'm not complaining, seeing the ducks always made my day better.
After graduating from Flinders, I miss looking out at the view regularly and trying to spot familiar places like the Aquatic Centre.
Many people pay great amounts to get a view, I got mine complimentary with my degree! The terrace was a great underrated lunch spot when it was open during my study. It felt like looking across the whole of Adelaide.
The diverse views of Flinders! By just turning around you could choose to look at hills or looking at the city.
This photo shows one of the most glorious moments in my life. My peers and I were waiting to be called to receive our graduation certificate on podium. As an international student it wasn't easy to be alone abroad. At the ceremony, my parents were behind me witnessing and giving me the greatest applause.
