“By sharing the care of patients with cancer between their specialist and GP, and shifting the focus of follow-up care away from the hospital, we believe we can increase the quality and efficiency of care, as well as make it more cost effective and satisfactory for patients.”
Breast cancer is the most diagnosed cancer in Australia, with an estimated 19,535 Australian patients diagnosed with breast cancer in 2019. Due to significant technology advancements and better early detection, the 5-year survival rate exceeds 90%, thus, there is a high demand for cancer survivorship support. Current models of care are specialist driven and surveillance focused.
The EMINENT trial demonstrated feasibility and success of a nurse-coordinated, shared-care follow up model. The IBIS-survivorship trial seeks to build on, and upscale, the EMINENT trial.
The IBIS-survivorship randomised controlled clinical trial follows and builds on the success of the EMINENT trial. The IBIS trial is a national study investigating a nurse coordinated, shared-care model over eight sites. The expansion of this model to other facilities aims to better understand the system implications and identify barriers to the model.
To assess the effectiveness and cost effectiveness of a nurse-coordinated, share-care follow-up model of care (IBIS survivorship model of care)
To demonstrate that General Practitioners may provide a holistic approach to care, facilitate a healthy lifestyle to prevent further chronic illness and offer greater patient satisfaction and flexibility in appointment intervals.
