“Prostate cancer is very treatable and patient numbers continue to grow. In the current care model, new patients are added to the system but are not discharged fast enough to community care when they finish cancer treatment. We need to create capacity in acute cancer centres to see new patients.”
There are 211,000 men in Australia currently living with prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is highly treatable with great survival rates leading to an increase of patients with ongoing follow-up care requirements. Research shows a that a shared-care model is feasible in other cancers, such as breast cancer and lymphoma. A pilot trial, ProCare in 2017 suggested no difference in the adherence to testing recommendations and men involved in the study significantly more likely to prefer a shared-care model to hospital follow-up. MOSES is a significantly larger 4-year clinical trial investigating a share-care model in prostate cancer survivors across multiple sites.
The MOSES trial is expected to include approximately 890 participants across 6 acute cancer centres and involve 900 General Practitioners in Queensland, South Australia, and Victoria over a four-year period.
To examine the feasibility of a shared-care system in the follow-up of patients treated for prostate cancer across multiple sites nationally.
To expand on the 2017 ProCare pilot trial and provide evidence for practice change.
