Why do veteran’s enter the criminal justice system? What are their experiences and needs once they become incarcerated?
Open Door’s study in South Australia, Queensland and New South Wales investigated these questions. The study conducted an international literature review which indicated that economic and cultural settings, living and working conditions, family life, housing, lifestyle choices and education were neglected issues.
Our study, funded by the Department of Veterans Affairs, showed that deteriorating mental health, substance abuse, homelessness, family violence and increased social isolation were all symptomatic of the fundamental failure to navigate the transition from military service to civilian life.
The overall finding pointed to inadequate separation and transition support for veterans which contributed to a spiral of social upheaval and disconnection.
Further findings described veterans feeling isolated when they entered incarceration. Existing regimes of medical and psychological care ceased upon entry into prison. Incarcerated veterans knew little of DVA and veteran sector support, and there were no specialist services for veterans in corrective services.
Recommendations were made for concrete improvements in transition support, and support in corrective services for veterans. The findings along with 21 recommendations were presented for action to the Department of Veterans Affairs in October, 2023.
