Digital Health
Electronic convergence of all points of patient care for sharing health information securely.
Digital health solutions are making health care more accessible, enabling a more holistic approach for clinicians and supporting the delivery of care through technology.
Through Flinders Digital Health Research Centre, we are developing and implementing computational and digital infrastructure solutions that improve the management of health in both social and clinical settings.
Musculoskeletal Health
Musculoskeletal disorders — 3rd leading cause of disease burden in Australia, with around 1 in 3 people affected by some form of musculoskeletal condition:
- 4 million Australians suffer from some form of chronic back pain
- 3.6 million have arthritis
- nearly 1 million have osteoporosis.
MDRI is focused on understanding the causes of musculoskeletal conditions and finding ways to treat and prevent them with expertise in both experimental and computational biomechanics. The Flinders Surgical Lab at Tonsley is a state-of-the-art facility where surgeons learn to use the latest products and equipment.
Monitoring & Diagnostics
Monitors vital physiologic parameters to inform clinicians of changes in a patient's condition.
Involved in monitoring devices across a broad range of clinical applications.
For example, through strong links with the Flinders Health and Medical Research Institute (FHMRI) Sleep Health, we are helping to develop novel and practical diagnostic and treatment approaches to address the burdens associated with sleep and respiratory health.
Biomaterials & Biosensors
Biomaterials play a critical role in medical technologies, in particular those devices in contact with, or implanted within, living tissue.
Biosensors measure biological or chemical reactions to diagnose and monitor disease progression through measurement of biomarkers in the body.
MDRI members with expertise in materials, chemistry and nanotechnology are developing new biosensors for point of care and are looking at a variety of biomaterials applications.

Our assistive technologies research is developing solutions to improve the functioning, independence and enhance overall well-being and quality of life for everyone.
