Choosing what to study at university can be overwhelming. From selecting the right subjects to understanding prerequisites and organising SATAC preferences, it’s no wonder this process can be stressful. But don’t worry; we’ve got you covered!
It’s okay not to be okay
Understanding stress
We all have days when we feel off but can’t pinpoint why. You might be attending school, hanging out with friends, and spending time with family, yet still feel tired and unmotivated. Concentrating on studying can feel like an uphill battle.
Recognising how stress impacts your well-being is crucial. Annabelle Neall, Lecturer of Mental Health and Wellbeing from the College of Education, Psychology and Social Work, emphasises that managing your mental health is just as important as time management during exams.
“When you don’t leave enough time for recovery, you can move toward chronic stress, which may lead to mental health issues,” Annabelle warns.
Decompress to destress
Simple ways to unwind
How can you relax during stressful times? The answer might be simpler than you think: do something you love! This helps your body recover from the cortisol surge that stress causes.
“Take breaks throughout the day to let your body decompress. Whether it’s grabbing a coffee with a friend or taking a short walk, find what helps you relax and enjoy it. Allow yourself time to engage in that activity knowing that it will lead to better mental health and productivity,” says Annabelle.

Tips to manage stress during exams
Create a study space you love
Make sure your study area is just right! Keep it at a comfy temperature, choose cozy furniture, ensure there's plenty of light, and keep it clutter-free.
Get good sleep
Try going to bed at the same time every night and aim for 7 to 9 hours of sleep. It can really boost your focus and improve your mood, plus it might help you avoid munching on too much junk food.
Watch your diet
Speaking of diet, did you know certain foods can help sharpen your focus? These “brain foods” can be your best friends when it comes to staying concentrated during your studies.
