It’s a well-known fact that we’re all born with a built-in understanding of how everything at university works.
Ok, before you reach for the facepalm emoji, don’t panic. At Flinders, we actually understand that starting at uni isn’t straightforward.
You’re not alone. In fact, you’re probably in the majority. When you start at uni, you’ll be joining a bunch of people just like you who are walking around trying to pretend they know exactly what they’re doing.
Fortunately, we have your back. The team at Flinders Connect have quite literally seen in and done it all before. We spoke to team members Olivia, Silas and Lucy to get a heads up on what goes down.
“Flinders Connect is often the first point of contact for new students. It could be students who are having difficulty with systems, with their enrolment, with their timetable... when they don’t know where to go, when they’re upset or distressed, about assessments or assignments, they call us first.”
As you can imagine, the Flinders Connect team have to deal with a wide range of questions.
“It’s a really broad range. People want to know how to get into the university initially, what kind of courses, what kind of pathways are available. They give you their career goals… I want to be this. What do I have to do to get there? They often want to know about fees and study modes… can I do this online, can I do this from home? Can I do this part-time or in a shorter time?
We have to be anticipatory, resourceful and knowledgeable.“
Flinders Connect can answer almost every question you can think of, including some that are a little bit out there, like the student who was asking how to change his ID card photo to help him get rid of ‘bad mojo’ (actually, it’s quite simple, but don’t ask me, ask Flinders Connect).
Olivia, Sila, Lucy and most of the team at Flinders Connect are current or past Flinders students, so they really understand what you’re going through, and they don’t expect you to understand how the university system works.
“What a lot of American media and movies paint university experience to be is what a lot of Australian students believe it is when they come out of high school. They think it’s like the movies they’ve grown up with their whole lives.”
Hint: it’s not. But the team will take the time to explain the differences.
“You get all sorts of personalities, so you have to be flexible with each individual, depending on their situation. You have to manage each student on their own terms and fix their problem.
We have seen it all. Every one of this team would sit and spend as much time as needed to help. We have a very student-centric approach. That’s a cornerstone of Flinders Connect. It’s all about student experience.”
So, what’s the takeaway from all this? Flinders Connect is there to help. If you have questions about study at Flinders, they have answers. And a few tips on removing bad mojo.
We offer one-on-one appointments with our prospective student team to discuss career options, pathways, and course and entry requirements.
